Talent matters. But the disparity between superstardom and obscurity may hinge initially on minor gaps in intrinsic ability. The benefits of early promise in competition and the tendency of elite professionals to team up with one another amplify and disproportionately reward even small differences.

Menger applies his temporal and causal analysis of behavior under uncertainty to the careers and oeuvres of Beethoven and Rodin. The result is a thought-provoking book that brings clarity to our understanding of a world widely seen as either irrational or so free of standards that only power and manipulation count.

A very very limited introduction

I am new to Linux and was hoping that this book would help me with the basics and leave me more knowledgeable than I was when I started. Unfortunately I was disappointed. Basics, like installing applications or networking a Linux PC with a Windows PC are entirely left out. On the other hand, the author spends a great deal of time explaining the applets that come with Redhat, even though they are really self explanatory if you've ever used their Windows equivalents. The book makes a very poor reference source, and was virtually no help to me. Perhaps they can leave out the lame humor and include more info in the next version.

A Good Book...For Somebody

I bought Red Hat Linux 8 for Dummies in the hope that it would give me some basic tools to use to administer my system. I was a little disappointed. The book is chock full of good information, but I found that I was only able to use a little bit of it. I think the book is full of quality information, but I really can't tell whom it's a good fit for.
The book features install and setup instructions. It can help you figure out how to install the OS and configure it on your PC, establish internet access (modem, broadband or LAN), and set up some useful tools, like a firewall and streaming media. It has nominal, but not great, coverage of the graphical OS environments, like GNOME. This is all great, but the installation and configuration process for Red Hat 8 isn't that difficult, and excellent instructions are available from many sources. The book includes CDs with the OS. But the OS is available for free from many download sites, so that's a matter of only small convenience. Also, the book is of very little use if you have an application in mind for your Red Hat installation. For example, if you want to run a web server or email server, or want to use your computer for any number of other specific purposes, this book will give you little or no help with that.
The book does provide a number of tips and some good problem-solving advice. And, it has a handy tear-out sheet of common commands in the front, which turns out to be more useful than you might imagine. The writing is clear, understandable by the layman, and it's well indexed so that you can find information you're looking for quickly.
The content that is there is great, but I frankly don't know who its target audience is; I'm not sure to whom to recommend it. It might serve adequately as a first reference book, but if you buy it for that, you will likely need another more detailed reference soon, as it doesn't really go all that far. This book is fine, so far as it goes, but a reader might be better off looking at one of the more comprehensive manuals out there (eg, Red Hat Linux 8 Unleashed), as many of them also cover the basics, including installation, but in better detail.

A good, though not great, starter kit

I found the book to be just what I needed. The book's focus is to get you started, either from scratch with a clean hard drive or with (or over) an existing OS (Windows or otherwise). I found the information sufficient to get all components of my PC operational, including setting up a cable modem connection via ethernet card. I'm not sure I understand some of the criticism some previous reviewers give, other than to think that despite the obvious title they were expecting a detailed non-introductory book.
I did find a few technical errors, and agree that not all topics covered where on target. In particular (and for instance), the coverage of the installation utility rpm was lacking. If you want to use the GUI provided to add additional packages from the CD that you didn't do during the basic installation you are fine, but if you are trying to install packages found from other sources you may have trouble.
However, for the price, including the CDs with a complete distribution, it is not a bad buy. After working your way though the book you'll have a solid understanding of what Linux is, how it works, how to use it, and, more importantly, how to decide if Red Hat or another distribution is the Linux version you want.

I didn't care for the characters. They weren't interesting. There were a lot of sex scenes, but they lacked emotional draw.

I wasn't thrilled. I wasn't drawn to the characters. The story was ok but could have used more depth. There were many sex scenes which were ok, but I wasn't drawn in emotionally. There was one event which didn't make sense to me. Dominic and Nadia like and enjoy each other, but he decides to return her to her home. This causes Nadia to feel rejected. He ends up taking her back, but I found it unnecessary. It was an illogical source of conflict. The Jelena story was a little more interesting, but again I wasn't drawn into the characters enough to enjoy it.

A minor problem: the cover picture is wrong. Dominic has a disfigured face. Cover guy does not.

STORY BRIEF:
Dominic is disfigured with scars on his face and body. Alexis had something to do with causing them when he broke up with her a few years back. She wants him dead and has a contract out on his life. He lives in a remote fortress-like home. Mikhail steals Dominic's car and sells it. Dominic comes to Mikhail's home threatening violence. Mikhail's daughter Nadia offers herself to Dominic saying she will live with him and do anything he says. He is intrigued and takes her home. He requires that she always be naked. They have a lot of sex which includes bondage, spanking and sex toys.

A second story is about Nadia's sister Jelena. She married a wealthy older man Henry. He pays a monthly allowance to Jelena and also to her father. Jelena asks for more money to help Nadia which Henry refuses. Jelena knows Henry will probably divorce her for someone younger and leave her with no money. She takes steps to get money and power. She uses sex to make this happen. There are several Jelena sex scenes in the book which include 2 women, 2 men with 1 woman, and rear door activity.

"Beauty and the Beast" Modernly Retold

Forgetting the fact that "Beauty and the Beast" told in the many different ways (culturally) has always been one of my favorite fairy tales, this book by Cathy Yardley is really good. Told with and in an excellent voice, composition, and new detailing, "Enslave" gives an erotically modern retelling of the story most of us have known since childhood. It isn't a story that is told with heavy emotions or incredible depth, but it does have a view that is by far spicy, sweet, charming, and interestingly nice in all the right ways.

Centered around three main characters this story begins similar to the old "Beauty and the Beast" in where the first main character, a Russian beauty, named Nadia Bessonova's father has stolen "the Rose" from the Beast. That "beast" being Dominic Luder who is an ex-criminal, killer, and mobster. It is because of that Dominic has come to brutally collect from the patriarch Bessonova, whose main course in life has been to steal, cheat, lie, and cast off his daughters through any means productive for him (such as marriage and sex). Bravely, Nadia makes the decision to go with Dominic so that she can buy her family sometime. While in captivity, she learns about satisfying lust and that Dominic is more than she expected. She learns that he is a trapped person who has created a prison as safety, and he learns through his regained lust and reopened vision how to trust and care for another again. However, as a new twist to the tale, the sister of Nadia, Jelena, comes to narrate the distressful and empowering attempt of helping her sister. With each narration you see every character grow and change (Nadia being the least to have to change) as their experiences happen to them.

In a nutshell, this book seriously won't let you down. However, that is all based upon the fact of your liking a "good" erotica and tale mixed together as one.
