Jack Olsen, "the master of the true crime book,"* now gives us an incisive, probing look into the creation and development of the criminal mind, as well as a shocking case of justice gone awry.

From childhood, McDonald Smith took to heart the lessons drummed into him by antisocial relatives and peers. As a teenager, unburdened by conscience or pity, he experimented with child abuse and bestiality, then moved on to larceny, stickups, incest, and, finally, rape. Warned by a "witch" that he was about to be arrested, he fled Los Angeles for Seattle and the Northwest -- already the breeding ground of predatory monsters like Ted Bundy, Kenneth Bianchi, and the Green River Killer. There, for years, he stalked the women of Seattle, seeking his prey on the dark streets and in the quiet homes, then returning to his wife and family: too careful -- and too clever -- to be caught.

By fall 1980, Mac Smith's luck still held. A respectable young businessman named Steve Titus found himself charged with one of Smith's most sadistic rapes in a nightmarish case of mistaken identity and injustice. The idealistic Titus was certain that the American system of justice would clear him -- right up to the day that a jury of his peers returned a verdict of guilty as charged.

While Mac Smith continued to terrorize the women of Seattle, Titus lost everything: his reputation, his job, his loved ones, his freedom. It was only when a Pulitzer prize-winning reporter answered Titus's pleas for justice that the terrible truth emerged: a truth that was darker than anyone imagined.

Predator is a gripping work of true crime reporting: Jack Olsen doing what he does best. It is a searing study of violations: of women, of justice, of power, and of the human spirit.

Amazon.com Review
With careful reporting that sticks close to the facts, Jack Olsen tells stories that seem straight out of crime fiction, and yet are all the more compelling for being true. This book focuses on three men--a criminal who preyed on women, a carefree partygoer who was wrongly convicted of the predator's crimes, and a reporter for the Seattle Times who won a Pulitzer Prize for tracking down the truth. It's supposed to be a rare event in the U.S. judicial system that someone this innocent gets screwed this badly. Even if it only happened to one person every decade, it would still be a horrible thing. And the smiling rapist, described as having a sweet "Jesus-like" countenance, knowingly allowed that to happen. Olsen not only delivers a real page-turner, but he ties up all the loose ends before the book's memorable and satisfying finale.

Beware: This could happen to anyone.
By Adrienne
This book is of a compelling, tragic and highly disturbing tale of the worst part of our justice system, and is, unfortunately, not an isolated case. It was hard for me to put the book down.
A note to the author: if you are going to self-publish again, hire a proper proofreader. The number of typos and typographical errors picks up frequency as the reader gets further into the book.

Predator Could Mean Lots of These People
By DooWopFan
What a compelling story! Jack Olsen's extensive coverage of the early life of
McDonald Smith adds greatly to understanding Smith's behaviors and his inability to
conform. There are many tragedies, not only Smith's victims, but also the arrest and
dogged prosecution of Steve Titus, an innocent man, by a tunnel-visioned and narrow-
minded police department more interested in a conviction than in justice. Olsen does
a superb job of developing the characters, making us feel we actually know
them. So many tragedies so many lives touched, so much suffering resulting from the
exploits of one man. The police could have stopped him so much earlier... they just
didn't try.

Excellent book
By Rose
Despite the title this book, unlike many of this genre, does not have extensive graphic scenes of the rapes. It is a detailed psychological portrait of a sociopath. I couldn't put it down once I started reading.

Whatever Happened to Good and Evil?, by Russ Shafer-Landau

Since September 11, 2001, many people in the United States have been more inclined to use the language of good and evil, and to be more comfortable with the idea that certain moral standards are objective (true independently of what anyone happens to think of them). Some people, especially those who are not religious, are not sure how to substantiate this view. Whatever Happened to Good and Evil? provides a basis for exploring these doubts and ultimately defends the objectivity of ethics. Engaging and accessible, it is the first introduction to meta-ethics written especially for students and general readers with no philosophical background. Focusing on the issues at the foundation of morality, it poses such questions as: How can we know what is right and wrong? Does ethical objectivity require God? Why should I be moral? Where do moral standards come from? What is a moral value, and how can it exist in a scientific world? Do cultural diversity and persistent moral disagreement support moral skepticism?
Writing in a clear and lively style and employing many examples to illustrate theoretical arguments, Russ Shafer-Landau identifies the many weaknesses in contemporary moral skepticism and devotes considerable attention to presenting, and critiquing, the most difficult objections to his view. Also included in the book are a helpful summary of all the major arguments covered, as well as a glossary of key philosophical terms. Whatever Happened to Good and Evil? is ideal for a variety of philosophy courses and compelling reading for anyone interested in ethics.

Review

"The idea behind this book was ingeniously conceived, and the execution of that idea is handled brilliantly. This is a superb book. It is philosophically astute, passionately argued, and written in a wonderfully accessible and eloquent style. I've never seen a better introduction to meta-ethics."--Brad Hooker, University of Reading

"This is an excellent introductory textbook on moral relativism and objectivity. It is concise, well-written, well-organized, and well-reasoned. It fills a real gap in the literature."--Paul K. Moser, Loyola University of Chicago

"The topic is timely, the execution is admirable, and there is no other book quite like it. I would gladly assign it to my students and recommend it to other teachers."--Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Dartmouth College

Well-written, engaging, but ultimately unpersuasive
By Snubnosed in Alpha
Russ Shafer-Landau's *Whatever Happened to Good and Evil?* is the more reader-friendly counterpart to his *Moral Realism: A Defence*. After a brief introduction of the philosophical terrain that he is to cover, Shafer-Landau begins his case for "ethical objectivism" (moral realism) by urging a powerful prima facie case against the varieties of moral skepticism. The moral skeptic is unable to account for the seeming possibility of moral error, moral disagreement or moral progress; affirms a position that, ironically, yields a kind of moral dogmatism (because each person's moral views are "correct" in the only possible sense that the skeptic can allow) and is unable to ground the value of tolerance, and must hold the implausible position that the respective moral views of a Mother Theresa and a Charles Manson are morally equivalent and arbitrarily espoused. The entire section is well done as it puts the moral skeptic on the defensive and challenges the common assumption that skepticism is the "default" position. A strong positive case for some variety of moral realism in the final section, Part Three, would, when combined with th e conclusions of Part Two, provide a powerful case for moral realism indeed.

However, in my opinion, Part Three does not ultimately deliver the goods. He opens this section with a chapter noting that ethical objectivism solves the various problems raised by moral skepticism, and this is surely correct. He also argues, convincingly, I think, that the fact of moral disagreement--even intractable disagreement--yields no conclusions of philosophical importance. (If we thought that it did, then what should we make of the fact that there is intractable *metaethical* disagreement? Shall we conclude that there is no truth of the matter of whether there is any truth of the matter?) And his final three chapters, which take on a variety of skeptical arguments, are quite good, I think. Chapter 20, in particular, "Why Be Moral?," takes on the "Argument from Rationality," which urges that (1) one is morally required to do A only if one has a reason to do A, (2) one has a reason to do A only if doing A serves one's own interests (Rational Egoism), (3) that what is in one's interests is fixed subjectively, so that, (4) moral requirement is itself a subjective matter. Though Shafer-Landau observes that "most philosophers" embrace (2), he displays, I think, good philosophical instincts in rejecting it, and offers some plausible counterexamples to it. Good chapter.

The weaknesses of the book are in chapters 15, 16 and 17. In chapter 15, Shafer-Landau takes up the question of whether the existence of God is necessary for the truth of ethical objectivism. He suggests that people who think so would appeal to the need of a "law maker" in order to have moral laws. Against this, he notes that there are all sorts of "laws," such as physical laws, that do not seem to require a law maker. And then he raises the standard Euthyphro argument against the law maker view. First, it is not clear to me that physical "laws" serve as a good analogy. Is there anything *normative* about gravity? Further, some theists might be inclined to argue from the existence of any normative construals of law (logic, epistemology) to God's existence. Consider, for instance, Victor Reppert's souped-up version(s) of C. S. Lewis's "Argument from Reason" (C.S. LEWIS'S DANGEROUS IDEA).

But my main problem with Shafer-Landau's argument is the blithe assumption that those who see God as essential to morality must have the "law giver" model in mind. Some might argue that a respect-for-persons ethic is necessary to make sense of our considered moral judgments, and that a theistic worldview accomodates the notion of dignity in a way that a naturalistic worldview does not. Or they might argue that it is God's essential *nature*--rather than his arbitrary will--that serves as the ultimate criterion for morality. Such formulations have been worked out by the likes of Robert Adams (*Finite and Infinite Goods*) and William Alston ("What Euthyphro Should Have Said" in William Lane Craig, ed., *Philosophy of Religion: A Reader and Guide*), and they seem immune to Euthyphro objections.

Chapters 16 ("Where Do Moral Standards Come From?") and 17 ("Values in a Scientific World") are Shafer-Landau's opportunity to make his positive case for ethical objectivism, but I found the chapters rather disappointing. In chapter 16, he entertains the plausibility of both ethical naturalism (moral properties are either identical to or constituted by natural properties) and non-naturalism (moral properties are sui generis), even though the latter is his actual position. But he offers precious little by way of defense of either, beyond appealing to other sorts of "standards" that may very well be "just true," and then asking why we should view moral standards with greater suspicion. The argument of chapter 17 makes similar appeals and, I think, displays similar weaknesses.
Read on.

Throughout the book, after covering a variety of arguments for moral skepticism, Shafer-Landau never entertains an argument that I, for one, find particularly compelling. If we assume the truth of metaphysical naturalism, and we appeal to a Darwinian explanation of our moral beliefs, then, arguably, we have an undercutting defeater for those moral beliefs. It seems plausible to suppose that, given the contingencies of the evolutionary landscape, we would have had the moral beliefs that we do *regardless* of whether they are true or false, since our having them is a non-moral means to the non-moral end of reproductive fitness. And, as Darwin observes, had that landscape been different, our "social instincts" and attending conscience would have urged us toward quite different behaviors, such as siblicide and infanticide (see chs. 4 and 5 of DESCENT OF MAN). Call such considerations "Darwinian Counterfactuals." If the moral laws that are in effect are contingent in this way, then it appears that there is a striking disanalogy between moral laws and, say, the logical laws to which Shafer-Landau appeals in establishing laws without a lawmaker. On the Darwinian scheme, there are possible worlds in which, say, the social system of the Taliban is considered just. But Darwin or no Darwin, there is no possible world in which modus ponens correctly replaces Affirming the Consequent. And the Darwinian explanation seems capable of accomodating and explaining the seeming objectivity of morality and its constancy and insistence within the human psyche. As Michael Ruse has observed, a part of the trick of getting us to cooperate is the widespread illusion of objectivity. Were we all convinced that the sense of moral obligation is, as Lewis once put it, the same sort of thing as our "fondness for cheese," we would be less likely to persevere in hard times.

Shafer-Landau could, of course, either deny that any Darwinian Counterfactual is true, or that prevailing moral beliefs are true in those worlds in which the antecedents obtain. That is, on the one hand, he could argue that the sorts of moral beliefs that prevail in the actual world (e.g., justice as a kind of equality) are evolutionary "forced moves," to use Daniel Dennett's term. (Vision of some sort may be such a "forced move" in any world in which there are "locomoters.") So Darwin's speculations regarding counterfactual moral belief systems are simply false: such counterfactual moral beliefs would never be selected for their fitness. But on metaphysical naturalism, those Darwinian counterfactuals seem both possible and plausible. The social instincts or "epigenetic rules" that are at the wellsprings of our morality are in place precisely because they prompt us towards fitness-conferring behavior. To imagine a change in the circumstances of reproductive fitness is to imagine a situation in which different behaviors-and instinctual proclivities--are fitness-conferring, and, thus, Darwin's suggestion just seems right.

On the other hand, he may allow that the evolutionary landscape may have produced widespread belief in "Talibanian" justice or the like, but simply deny that the beliefs in such worlds are true. The sense of justice that enjoys widespread acceptance in the actual world corresponds to and apprehends that transcendent standard of justice among the verities. But barring some Moral Author of the world who sees to it that humans cultivate generally true moral beliefs, how plausible is it that the contingencies of our evolution would have led us to embrace such transcendent standards as the objects of our moral beliefs? The option under consideration here has it that the Darwinian counterfactuals suggest very real possibilities: we might have turned out to have regarded as obligatory and meritorious those very acts that, in the actual world, are seen as atrocities. But we did not. How shall we then explain the fact that, of all the possible moral psychologies that could have emerged, the contingent circumstances of the landscape aligned themselves in such a way as to produce creatures who apprehend the necessary Moral Truths? A sort of "Moral Fine-Tuning Argument" suggests itself. I would very much like to see Shafer-Landau interact with such evolutionary arguments for moral skepticism.

Shafer-Landau writes in a straightforward, engaging and sometimes humorous style, and exudes a becoming modesty regarding the strength of his own arguments. The clarity of his reasoning and exposition makes it easy even for the philosophical neophyte to understand just what is at issue and what must be argued in order either to make or break his case. In fact, a very helpful appendix reduces the main arguments of the chapters to syllogistic form, helping the reader to identify crucial premises of the arguments. Indeed, here is an author who understands that there is no such thing as philosophy without argument, and he models for the reader what it is to *do* philosophy, in offering and assessing arguments. I used the book as the first text in my class on Ethical Theory, and with great success. I found that even those students new to philosophy were gaining a clear understanding of what separates the sheep from the goats when it comes to philosophical argumentation. For this reason, I highly recommend the book not just as a text in Ethics, but perhaps even as an opening text in a course in Intro to Philosophy.

Meta-Ethics for the Beginner
By ctdreyer
This book is a very nice, and very basic, introduction to meta-ethics, the field of philosophy studying the metaphysical, epistemological, semantic, and psychological issues concerning morality. Though it might help to have had some prior philosophy, it should be accessible to anyone who is interested in what philosophers might have to say about the these issues. Shafer-Landau has decided to introduce meta-ethics through an extended argument concerning a single topic: the objectivity (or lack thereof) of morality. And while this is only one of the issues that meta-ethicists discuss, it's perhaps the single most important and general issue in the field.
Shafer-Landau writes a clear and accessible style, and his book isn't jargon-laden. He is, moreover, up-front about the nature of his arguments, what he's assuming, and where people might respond to his arguments. He doesn't expect the reader to piece his arguments together for herself or to expend a great deal of effort trying to figure out just what he means. He makes his points lucidly and succinctly, and then he moves on to the next one. And despite its brief length, this book is packed full of interesting and important arguments both for and against the objectivity of ethics. (There's also a helpful short appendix that summarizes the main arguments of the book and Shafer-Landau's analysis of them.) Importantly, though, this is not a work covering the literature on this topic. Shafer-Landau refers to other philosophers only occasionally, and he tends to refer to major historical figures when he does refer to philosophers. Nor is this a work covering the various positions that have been defended in meta-ethics. It introduces meta-ethics by developing and defending a position on a particular topic in meta-ethics rather than by presenting and criticizing all the views that are of importance in the field. And this is the source of my only substantial criticism of this book. It would be nice if Shafer-Landau had engaged with the literature a little more. While this isn't such a major problem, it would have been nice if the book could work as a entry to the literature on the topic. Indeed, the book doesn't even include a guide to further reading on these topics, and so it provides no suggestions about where the reader might go from here.
Now for something about the relevant philosophical issues here. First, the most obvious question: What would it be for morality to be objective? According to Shafer-Landau, it would be for there to be right and wrong, good and bad, etc. independent of what human beings think or feel or desire. And Shafer-Landau's aim in this book is to argue that morality is indeed objective. What would someone who argues against this position think? What would it be for morality to be subjective? Shafer-Landau considers three different versions of subjectivism: nihilism, the view that there are no moral facts of any type; subjectivism, the view that the moral facts are constituted by each individual's beliefs or feelings or desires; and relativism, the view that the moral facts are constituted by each group's practices or conventions. All of this material is presented in the first two chapters of this book. The first chapter sketches the issue concerning the objectivity of ethics, and the second presents these positions.
The rest of the book is divided into two parts. The first part argues against the forms of subjectivism described above (and thereby presents a prima facie case for objectivism), and the second part argues against certain important objections to objectivism. The primary form of argument Shafer-Landau uses in the first part is that various types of subjectivism can't account for our ordinary conception of the status and nature of morality. Here he discusses several traditional lines of argument: that subjectivism allows for no notion of moral error, that subjectivism doesn't allow us to compare the quality of distinct moral views, that subjectivism can't make sense of the possibility of moral progress, that subjectivism isn't a good way to promote tolerance (and indeed subjectivists may not be able to argue against the intolerant, that subjectivism can't account for the nature of moral disagreement, and that subjectivism may in fact be an inconsistent position. Each of these objections is considered in a separate chapter, and each chapter--most of them less than ten pages long--discusses how each objection affects all three of the forms subjectivism discussed above.
The upshot of the first part is supposed to be that morality certainly does not seem to be subjective in the way these theories tell us, and so we have some reason to think that subjectivism is false and that some sort of objectivism is true. But how could objectivism be true? What could an objective moral position be exactly? Answering these questions is Shafer-Landau's aim in the second part of the book. He begins with a short chapter arguing that objectivism avoids all of the problems he developed for subjectivism. However, he admits that this doesn't constitute a knock-down argument for objectivism, as there are many arguments for the conclusion that objectivism isn't and couldn't be true. The rest of the second part is intended to undermine various traditional and important arguments that morality isn't objective, and so the rest of the book is largely defensive. He considers the following arguments: that objectivism is undermined by the existence and persistence of moral disagreement, that objective moral standards would have to depend on God, that objective moral values are inconsistent with a naturalistic and scientific worldview, that objectivists can't account for our ability to acquire moral knowledge, and that we have no good reason to be moral. Again, each of these arguments is considered in a separate chapter.
I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in what philosophers might have to say about the objectivity of morality, and to anyone who is coming to meta-ethics for the very first time. This would be a fine book for an introductory course on these issues. It's well-argued; it gives the reader a sense of how to argue about these issues; it would be accessible to someone with no background in this area; and its chapters are brief enough that there is quite a bit one could say to clarify its arguments, consider their nuances, and examine their cogency.

The best introduction to a very important topic
By J. A. McCarron
Many of the reviews that give this book less than 5 stars often do so because they do not see one issue or another the same as the author. Although I also disagree with some of the authors conclusions I really think that misses the purpose and *importance* of this book. I do not see this book as the authors attempt to give rigorous argument for his own views. Instead this book is an excellent introduction to the study of meta-ethics. Without, at all, reading like you would imagine a book entitled "introduction to meta-ethical theory" would read.

It lays the groundwork for further study that would otherwise be inaccessible to most people. It does so in a more enjoyable way than any other book I have seen. I think this makes this book one of the most important books of our time - if only more people would read it!

In this book you will learn the basic concepts and vocabulary of meta-ethics. This book is a bridge between the discourse of those who are knowledgeable about meta-ethics and those who just have vague inklings of the topic. If there is a book that does a better job of this please let me know. Because I think this one is considerably better than any other I have read.

With a book like this we have no excuse to remain ignorant of the basic concepts and issues underlying our ethical views. If your understanding of this topic is hazy, then read this book. You won't regret it. Our ethical foundation is what we base all of our actions in life. It's important.

Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future, by Johan Norberg

It’s on the televisions, in the papers and in our minds. Every day we’re bludgeoned by news of how bad everything is – financial collapse, unemployment, growing poverty, environmental disasters, disease, hunger, war. But the rarely acknowledged reality is that our progress over the past few decades has been unprecedented. By almost any index you care to identify, things are markedly better now than they have ever been for almost everyone alive.

Examining official data from the United Nations, the World Bank and the World Health Organization, political commentator Johan Norberg traces just how far we have come in tackling the issues that define our species. While it's true that not every problem has been solved, we do now have a good idea of the solutions and we know what it will take to see this progress continue. Dramatic, uplifting and counter-intuitive, Progress is a call for optimism in our pessimistic, doom-laden world.

Review
Named one of the best books of the year by The Economist

"Persuasive."
―The Wall Street Journal

"In this brightly written, upbeat book, Johan Norberg blends facts, anecdotes, and official statistics to describe 'humanity's triumph' in achieving the present unparalleled level of global living standards. By virtually every measure—food, sanitation, life expectancy, poverty, violence, the environment, literacy, freedom, equality, the conditions of childhood—life has improved for most people, writes the author. .... While acknowledging the mayhem, hunger, and poverty still facing much of the world, Norberg remains optimistic that human ingenuity will prevail in shaping the future. A refreshingly rosy assessment of how far many of us have come from the days when life was uniformly nasty, brutish, and short. "
Kirkus Reviews

"His unfailing optimism and well-argued points generate powerful good-news vibes."
—Esquire(UK)

"Norberg has a strong case and he makes it with energy and charm. A pertinent book for grumpy times."
—Sunday Times (UK)

"Johan Norberg chronicles the still largely unknown fact that humanity is now healthier, happier, cleaner, cleverer, freer and more peaceful than ever before. He also explains why in this superb book."
—Matt Ridley, author of The Evolution of Everything

"At a time of profound pessimism, Johan Norberg is refreshingly, but not glibly, optimistic. His excellent book documents the dramatic improvements in people’s lives and reminds us of the huge potential for further progress – provided we are open to it."
—Philippe Legrain, author of European Spring

"An exhilarating book. With the combination of arresting stories and striking data, Progress will change your understanding about where we’ve come from and where we may be heading."
—Steven Pinker, author of The Better Angels of Our Nature

A Case for Global Optimism
By George P. Wood
“Nothing is more responsible for the good old days,” wrote Franklin Pierce Adams, “than a bad memory.” The good old days, in other words, weren’t so good. Indeed, if Johan Norberg is to be believed, the good old days are right now.

Drawing on a variety of social science data, Norberg points to ten ways the world has progressed over the last three centuries:

• Food is plentiful and cheap.
• Clean water and good sanitation are increasingly available.
• Life expectancy is longer.
• Poverty has fallen dramatically.
• War and violence blight fewer lives.
• Increasing wealth has benefited the environment.
• Literacy is widespread.
• People are increasingly free of arbitrary authority.
• Equality is increasingly experienced and demanded.

None of this denies specific counterexamples, of course. Hunger, pollution, terrorism, and poverty are facts of life for many throughout the world. Still, in historical perspective as well as in absolute terms, these ills are on the decline.

Take extreme poverty, for example. Norberg writes:

"…In 1981, fifty-four per cent of the world lived in extreme poverty, according to the World Bank. This already marks an historic achievement. According to an ambitious attempt to measure poverty over the long run, with a $2 a day threshold for extreme poverty, adjusted for purchasing power in 1985, ninety-four per cent of the world’s population lived in extreme population in 1820, eighty-two per cent in 1910 and seventy-two percent in 1950.

"But in the last few decades things have really begun to change. Between 1981 and 2015 the proportion of low- and middle-income countries suffering from extreme poverty was reduced from fifty-four percent to twelve per cent….

"…By all our best estimates, global poverty has been reduced by more than one percentage point annually for three decades."

The next time you and your friends debate income inequality, keep that statistic in mind. Yes, there is income inequality in the world, but the floor of that inequality is no longer extreme poverty for the vast majority of the world’s population.

That’s good news, right? Of course it is! And it’s a reason—along with other improvements in the material conditions of humanity—to give thanks at this time of year.

This book is a revelation!
By Reynold Feldman
Norberg cites chapter and verse, facts and trustworthy research results, to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that progress across the board has been achieved for humankind. Every literate person should read this book, which goes against our common belief that the world is going to hell in a hand basket. The highest possible praise for this book.

Reynold Feldman, Ph.D.

These are the Best of Times
By Alan Cook
All pessimists (such as myself) should read this book. Check that. Everybody should read this book. It tells about what few people realize--that we are living in the best of times, and that the human race has made enormous progress in the past few hundred years, and even in the past fifty years. And it is continuing as we speak. Norbert talks about the following topics: food, sanitation, life expectancy, poverty, violence, the environment, literacy, freedom and equality. We have made huge advances in all of these areas, even since our grandparents were our age. If you are over a certain age, you wouldn't even want to go back to the living conditions of your youth: no cellphones, no Internet, possibly no television (my parents didn't buy a TV until after I left home). This progress has been made practically everywhere in the world. However, we must make sure it continues. We must guard against superstition and bureaucracy. To quote from the end of the book, we must have "hard-working people, scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs with strange, new ideas, and brave individuals who fought for their freedom to do new things in new ways. If progress is to continue, you and I will have to carry the torch."

Optoelectronic devices transform electrical signals into optical signals (and vice versa) by utilizing the interaction of electrons and light. Advanced software tools for the design and analysis of such devices have been developed in recent years. However, the large variety of materials, devices, physical mechanisms, and modeling approaches often makes it difficult to select appropriate theoretical models or software packages. This book presents a review of devices and advanced simulation approaches written by leading researchers and software developers. It is intended for scientists and device engineers in optoelectronics who are interested in using advanced software tools. Each chapter includes the theoretical background as well as practical simulation results that help the reader to better understand internal device physics. Real-world devices such as edge-emitting or surface-emitting laser diodes, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, photodetectors, and integrated optoelectronic circuits are investigated. The software packages described in the book are available to the public, on a commercial or noncommercial basis, so that the interested reader is quickly able to perform similar simulations.

By Andrew Bishop
Parallel Worlds Explored was the first of EJ Gold’s books I read. It had a huge effect on me, and seemed to melt away some of my rigid and unhelpful beliefs about “how things work”. The book helped me to begin to be honest about what I truly do or do not know for sure. I'm tremendously grateful to the author for the positive impact the book had on me.

This is the passage I marked the first time I read the book, the part which shattered my grumpy view of things:

“You’ve probably noticed that in the universe that you’re in there’s a lot of individuals that have very strong opinions about what absolutely, categorically cannot happen. If you’re looking for a phenomenon that you can codify, carve into cement and use to show them that they are wrong, it’s not going to pass muster.
“Well, you can do it, but they won’t accept it. Because even if you could codify it into human standards, it doesn’t match their particular brand of suffering. It doesn’t match their brand of belief system.
“It’s like they hold in place a suppressive field that prevents anything that they would truly understand and accept from occurring, which means that if you’re going to hear a spirit on the radio, it’s going to happen in such a way that they will not be convinced.”
