So You Want To Learn Guitar? Beginner’s Guitar Lessons by Joseph Alexander Sets You on the Path and Gets You Moving

You’ve looked at this book, and you’re reading this review because you want to start learning the guitar, or you’ve already put your hand to it but You Tube isn’t giving you the info’ you need in a way that flows into a sensible learning progression; yes?

Me too.

You’ve been reading the Amazon reviews of book after book with things like ‘Beginners Guide’ or ‘10 Easy Steps’ in the title, and so many of them have those worrying few comments like, “This is really too advanced for a beginner”, or, “I suppose some people have different ideas of what a beginner is”, and you’re just not confident about spending your cash despite the other four glowing reviews.

I did that; window shopped for hours.

In the end I picked, ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’, by Joseph Alexander. The reviews read about right, it didn’t promise that I’d be playing like Yngwie Malmsteen in just ten days (snake oil’s still oily, no matter how pretty the bottle). And too, perhaps I just got sick of searching, but I was given confidence by the number of positive comments on Joseph Alexanders books, and the range of well reviewed books focussing on modern guitar that Mr Alexander had published. I also noticed that the very few negative comments weren’t related to the course content.

What a spot of luck. The book is a gem; easy to read, easy to follow with exercises that are genuinely at a beginner level and not discouragingly difficult. More importantly, the true basics are covered: How to hold your instrument; how to hold a pick, how to strum, how to place your fingers on the fretboard and where should your thumb go? All covered quickly and concisely in amongst the other lessons so you can get on with learning to play.

I went from having to ask the shop assistant to audition an electric guitar for me because I didn’t know how to get it to make a sound that wasn’t discordant, to being able to put my fingers to about a dozen or so chords without needing to see a chord chart, knowing which chords they actually are, being able to strum several basic rhythmic patterns by seeing the standard notation, getting the basics of reading tablature and first steps towards hybrid picking, all in about 4 weeks at less than an hour a day.

Sure, I fumble at chord changes still, but that’ll come with time and practice. I know this because I’m already seeing the improvements in my ability. My rhythm has a way to go before I make it up to just ordinary; I’m always pulling ahead of the metronome. Again, time and practice, but ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’ has given me the knowledge to get this far and the tools to practice with.

Along with the book you also get to download a set of audio examples off Mr Alexander’s web site. These small downloads are short and simple, and have real value: I was practicing a strumming pattern on a D major chord the other day, and I thought to myself, “damn, that sounds ordinary; this can’t be right”, a quick play through of the example and, “whoa, that sounds just like when I do it; I must be getting it right. I guess that’s why there aren’t many pop tunes based solely on quarter note D major strums”. It gives a way to check yourself, it gives confidence and somewhere to go if you just need to hear an exercise to pick up what supposed to be happening.

You’ll notice that there’s no mention here of picking away learning the notes on each string at the first three or five frets like those particularly dull books the guitar shop guys have in the rack. You know the ones; four weeks later and you can limp through a single string version of Mary Had a Little Lamb because you know how it’s supposed to go, not because you can actually sight read the standard notation you’re staring at while you do it. The ones that come with a free chord chart, but don’t actually progress to making a chord at any time before the book runs out.

They sold me one too. I’ll go back to it and give it some attention at some point too. Maybe.

Joseph Alexander’s, ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’, is nothing like that; it heads you towards playing music with real world rhythm and chord skills from day one. Sure there are one or two dull lessons, but by the time you finish you’ll actually want to go back and practice those properly, so you can try them out with the more advanced things you’ve learned.

Sure, it’s going to be a while before my skill level grows into that Gretsch I bought, but I always knew there was no real way to go from music consumer to music maker over night. This outstanding book of true beginner’s lessons has me squarely on the path though, and hungering for more.

Where’s the down side? I want more. I want the next step. Joseph Alexander has other books and that’s where I’ll turn next. Some of the diagrams are a bit of a squint on a Kindle, but they can be coped with and after a short while you don’t really need those tiny chord charts above the notation except as reminders; they’re visible enough for that without any problems (I might add I’m as blind as a bat and wear glasses, so you probably won’t have any trouble).

If like me, you’re wanting to learn guitar and don’t know where to start, or aren’t satisfied with the start you’ve made, then ‘Beginner’s Guitar Lessons: The Essential Guide’ is a great first step that will point you down the right track and get you moving. I thoroughly recommend it. If a middle aged guy with no prior knowledge like myself can do it, then with the help of Joseph Alexander’s book, you can too.

This book is excellent for beginners, because it gives you all the staff to start and start well.
I have started to learn how to play the guitar but I had started bad because I have to have the solid first steps that this book give you such as the knowledge about chords, strumming, tempo.I am about to finish this book and I can wait to start reading and practicing the others ones.

Makes a difference in my practice

I've being playing for about a year now. My schedule makes it difficult to do the required routine. This book has helped to fill in those things I've missed or didn't get the first time. And the audio is great because sometimes I'm left wondering just exactly what sounds I should be making precisely. I am finally getting to the point in my practice that I enjoy it more and actually look forward to it. The other night we had a party; I played and sang silly songs with others at our own " Amateur Hour". I was great! Thank you

Quick read

This was an improvement on the first two novels by Jenny Frame. I thoroughly enjoyed Annie and Riley, and Harry was interesting enough. The idea of bringing an estate back to life provided an interesting backdrop.

The relationship between Harry and Annie gravitated between sweet and infuriating. I loved the gestures from Annie and Harry's relationship with Riley, but the back and forth of 'I need a commitment' and 'I can't be what you need' drove me nuts. Over, and over and over for half of the damn book, and then they reversed positions until I just wanted to scream. But it did manage to avoid a trope that I assumed would pop up, so kudos for that.

It's a fairly quick read, and an improvement from this author. Quade was also an interesting secondary character, I'm assuming a possible sequel for her.

3 1/2 stars. I thought this was a better effort from the author's last two books. It was a pleasant read, but I found the writing and the plot simplistic. While the book started off well, it quickly went into a formularic, too sweet romance with little happening in the last third of the novel. Harry's self-recriminations got very wearing by the end.The plot could have been enhanced by more depth in the supporting cast. The lesbian vicar was a great character, but the reader was only given a very sketchy profile. Bringing a noble estate back to its former glory was an interesting backdrop and more could have been done with that, rather than the constant back and forward "will I, won't I." of the two main characters.

A Pretty Good Read

3 1/2 Stars. This is my first book by Frame, and I thought it was pretty good. Being from the USA and not really knowing titles, I just assumed this book would be a historical romance. I soon realized, when a character said "smartphone", that this is a current book. I actually think I liked it more because of that. It was a current romance, but still made you feel like you were stepping back in history. The story is about a housekeeper, Annie, who moves her daughter into the grand house of the new Countess, Harry Knight. Harry doesn't want to be a Countess, she only wants to renovate the home to it's original glory, than move on with her life. As sparks seem to fly between Annie and Harry, they don't know if they should take a chance or run far away.

I was up and down on liking the characters. I could not stand Henrietta (Harry) at all, in the beginning. I did like the other main Annie, to start off with. But as the book went on, the characters swapped for me. I started to find Annie very annoying, and I realized Harry was really a damaged kid, in an adult's body. As Harry grew, as a character, I grew in my compassion for her. The one character, who did remain consistently likeable, was Annie's daughter Riley. She was absolutely adorable, and one of the better written kids in any LesFic book. She added to the story and the relationship between the two mains.

When it came to the romance of the book. That was also a bit up and down. Get ready for some angst! There was so much "I want you, but I'm running away". "But maybe I really do want you, no, I'm running away again". Drove me a bit nuts. This, and the on and off likeability of the main characters, is what stopped me from rating this more than 3 1/2 Stars. Now, there was some good romantic parts, and even parts that made me feel enough to tear up. The sex scenes were pretty well done also.
I'm going to recommend this book to romance fans, that like some angst in their books. And also don't mind going through some ups and downs, and quite a bit of indecision.

Finally..a good alternative to Rosai and Sternberg!!!

When I found everybody goes for Rosai or Sternberg books, I decided to go for something different and found this. I think I did the right thing! The new edition of this book is excellent. Very organized, up-to-date information, and very nice pictures. The text is easily read. The online version of the book makes the task of searching much easier (especially when you feel lazy to pull the heavy books of Sterberg or Rosai from the shelves and surf their pages!!! - they do not exist online!!). If you think to go for this book, you will love it. However, Sternberg has more details than this book (I love the tables in Sternberg)- this is why I didn't give this book five stars- but modern surgical pathology is more organized , concise and exists online. If you combine both in your library, you are set in general surgical pathology.

A new entry in the comprehensive textbooks of surgical pathology, Modern Surgical Pathology is well written resulting in an easy read. It was also the first of the major surg path textbooks to include a CD rom. The CD rom contains additional images that are not in the book supplementing the reader's leraning. I originally bought this book because all of the other residents had Rosai, Silverberg, or Sternberg and I figured that I could always have access to the other texts, however, I have preferred to read Modern Surgical Pathology.

In his peculiar modest way, he describes his life and successes in his beloved St. Edwards School and his triumphs at Fourah Bay College. He entered the Public Service of Sierra Leone in 1955, and in the year of Independence he was deployed in the Prime Minister's Office, where he was given the responsibility of recruiting and training Sierra Leoneans to replace the expatriate staff of the colonial administration and for the transformation of the Civil Service into one for an Independent State. He describes the way he did it and the immense satisfaction he found in serving his country well at that important turning point in its history. The Author also gives an insider's account of the 1967 General Elections and the conflict arising therefrom. He candidly describes the events of that period and refutes many of the speculations, distortions and guesses about what really happened in those few days. Working with the NRC, with all the eccentricities of Brigadier Juxon-Smith is an unforgettable experience, and the reader is given a glimpse of it in this book.

It was amazing! Knowing the author personally I read the book with awe, respect and pride for my uncle. A very honest man and an enigma worthy of emulation. I have given my son the book to read and I hope all great or wanna be great people can read this book and learn from it. May God bless him and keep him, do that more generations may learn from him. The old men write their memories - bravo

Peter Tucker, 88 years, shows himself as the honest administrator and law advisor he probably always was in his long life. Especially the part on the administrations of the two Margai (to both of whom he was secretary) and the elections of 1967 give clarification for me. I am surprised that there are so many older Sierra Leoneans who are now publishing their memoirs. Sama Banya, Abdul Karim Koroma, Peter Tucker, Solomon Berewa, Eldred Jones, Ahmad Tejan-Kabbah, also Macbailey Fyle's "National History of Sierra Leone" - on another level. It is wonderful and a great contribution to their country even if the number of their readers might be small. But it contributes to the historical memory of Sierra Leone.

Cool, Funny,Intriguing Book!

This fun book by author Heidi Priebe is engaging, full of facts about each personality type, and very true. I was laughing at many of the situations some of the 16 Meyers Briggs Personality Types were described in, and at their imagined choices and reactions. However, this book is never cruel and doesn't play favorites, even if the author is herself an ENFP.
I took 4 or 5 tests online to see which personality type I am before I read this book. It isn't necessary to do that, however, because the author has provided a quick test right at the beginning of the book so that you, the reader, can figure out "what you are" with no difficulty. That is, assuming your S.O. has left the book out on the bedside table,and is busy taking a shower.Wait...that is also assuming your S.O. has halfway decent cleanliness habits and takes a long enough shower. That's Heidi's joke. She says it way more amusingly. Read this charming book and have some fun--you deserve it! And nah, I am not going to tell you which personality type I am! I enjoyed spotting a few of my family members and my best friend and I am not going to tell them, either! Let them find themselves!

I think it is a good starter book for somebody who has never heard about Myer Briggs Personality typology. It gives good general information (Maybe a book you would use for fun at a party?). Being familiar with the concept, it did not hold the additional wisdom for me that I was hoping to find.
