Get ready to sweat!

I began using this book as the recommended text for a community education beginners Polish language class that I started last fall(2012). Our instructor is a native Polish speaker and she said that this series of books is designed to be used by any person of any language background who wishes to learn Polish. However, I find the book to be cumbersome as it is entirely written in Polish, which is difficult for a beginner to use. I found that I needed to use Google translate to understand the directions for the exercises.

The lessons don't seem to be well organized or very coherent, and the material tends to jump around from concept to concept.

I think that the book's strength is that it does help develop Polish reading skills quickly, but has a beginning text I am not sure that I would recommend it. I think that I am going to try a different textbook with English as well as Polish translation for the lessons.

Bardzo dobra książka! (Very good book)

When I read the reviews, I wasn't sure about this book because it is all in polish. But I bought it anyway. This is the best book if you are looking to speak and learn polish. They break it down very easily. I have bought several books to help me learn polish and none of them made the grammar look and feel as simple as this book does. Now, you and me both know, polish grammar is complex, however, this book doesn't make it feel that way. They ease into it. I fully recommend this book!

Thorough way to learn Polish

This is an excellent academic book to use to learn Polish. Beware, however, that you need to already know how to read Polish in order to most effectively use this book. The book does not have English translations. I am using the book to teach my children Polish.

I am an advanced seamstress and I design patterns. I spent hundreds of dollars buying commercial slopers. I cannot get over that this book includes blocks for children from sizes 3-12. Whether you intend to design clothing for your own child or you want to design patterns for sale, this is a good place to start. The blocks included in the book more than pay for the purchase price.
Carla has said that this is not a comprehensive pattern drafting book. That is correct, however, if you have a working knowledge of pattern drafting, the book will be very useful for you. There are links to other books on pattern drafting for those who want more information.
Links to the slopers are included, so you do not have to draft your own blocks from measurements. I think that's important to know if you are just starting out.
If I was just starting to design children's clothes, this would be the first book I'd buy. It is well written and very clearly illustrated.

My very first PDF pattern was one of Carla's patterns. I loved the way she explained everything and all of her tips and tricks. Over the years, I have started creating things on my own and have been asked for patterns of items. With not knowing where to start, I never did it. When I seen this book was coming out, I knew I had to buy it. Boy am I glad I did! Received it on a Thursday and by Friday afternoon I had read it cover to cover. In pure Carla fashion, she explains things very well. The info contained in this book is well worth more than the purchase price. From measurements and slopers to lovely dresses and corsets, this book has you covered. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready to start creating their own patterns.

Fascinating yet Practical

I have been reading through this book for a few weeks and I am so impressed with how complete it is. It is chalk full of great ideas, tips and detailed explanation on exactly what to do to create children's sewing patterns. The author, Carla Crim, is a master teacher in that respect. She is able to capture the beginner or experienced sewist and explain the details in such a way that everyone can follow along. The chapters are arranged beginning with the basics and then she takes you through how to make all types of tops, pants, skirts, dresses and rompers. Finally, the book describes how to take it to the pro level. I've been sewing for years and years yet learned something new in each chapter. There are excellent charts, pictures and diagrams throughout the whole book. I would obviously HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who sews. Even if you don't plan on making patterns, to gain the understanding of how patterns are designed really helps sewists to understand how garments are put together or how to make adjustments during construction. MUCH SUPERIOR TO MANY MODERN TEXTS

There is much of importance in the Science as a Vocation essay. But I will concentrate on my own domain, namely the qualities needed from political leaders.
Having studied the German original and later taught the vocation lectures many years ago, still I decided to reread them in a new and much improved translation. I did so while finalizing a manuscript of my own on the qualities of mind required from political leaders in the emerging epoch of metamorphosis.
The text is based on a lecture given before a student organization in Munich in January 1919, with some additions. This context influenced much of the contents. But this was a period of transformation, as is ours (and as was the period of Machiavelli), making some of his comments all the more pertinent.
In particular relevant for our period are, inter alia, the following qualities which Weber demands from those wishing to be political leaders: living for politics and not from it; being fully committed to politics as a "vocation," including in the sense of "calling;" acting according to an ethics of responsibility for consequences, in some relation with an "ethics of commitment," making all of political leadership into an ethical endeavor; being fully mature, in the sense of ability "to scrutinize the realities of life ruthlessly, to withstand them, and to measure up to them inwardly (page 91); understanding the crucial importance of power and force; taking "distance" from issues and oneself; and, on important issues, "reaching the point where he says, `Here I stand, I can do no other'" (page 92).
These and other insights make the Politics as a Vocation text much superior to the vast majority of modern books on the requirements of political leadership. It should be a central text in all teaching and mentoring on political leadership. And at least pages 76-94 require reading and rereading by all politicians and whoever considers choosing politics as his vocation.

Fascinating insight into interbellum Germany

This book contains two lectures given by Max Weber in 1917 and 1918 (two years before his death). The lectures came about as a result of a repeated request from the Universty of Munich.

The lectures centers around two topics, what is required by somebody seriously persuing vocation as a scienctist, and what is the marking of a true politician? This is not a regular essay, it is not divided into chapters, and Weber is not trying to present any theories etc.

I found the lectures to be very interesting, because they show us the thoughts of a great thinker at the end of his life. They contain a lot of observations on life and society in general, many of which are not uplifting. One can really sence here the dark, uncertain and gloomy times that was interbellum Germany. At one point in the politics-lecture, one it is almost eerie to read how close Weber came to predicting the events which were to take place in germany 10 years later.

Not a must have for most people, but for those interested in Weber, interbellum Europe, or great thinkers in general, I would recommend this book.

Fabulous in depth discussion of the cingulate cortex

Starting with the basic neuroanatomy and connectivity, this text builds through functional studies to clinical applications. The four region model is well concieved and laid out. The functional results follow logically, ending with the clinical implications. This is quite a dense text, but vital for anyone interested in the functional neuroanatomy of pain and psychiatric disease.

Ages 2^-4. Carle's signature strong collages are put to good use in this book about movement. In each two-page spread, a child is paired with an animal, and kids are invited to make the same movement as the duo. Usually, the movement is one that comes naturally to the animals--for instance, an elephant stomps its feet, and so does a girl with braids; a gorilla thumps its chest, and so does a young boy. (Sometimes the connection is more tenuous, such as the alligator wiggling its hips.) The oversize art set against expanses of white will intrigue young children, who will enjoy both seeing the art and doing their own movements. The book will work well in story hours: a bit of wiggling and thumping will make a pleasurable break in the listening. Most libraries will want to shelve this with picture books. Ilene Cooper

Actions for Every Page!

Get your little one moving! This is such a fun book. Each page has a different action that your little one can try to mimick. Bend your neck like a giraffe, thump your chest like a gorilla, kick your leg like a donkey, etc. Our 18 month old already recognizes some of the actions for each page before we even read the text. A great size (board book) for on the go, but not so small you can't see the text or illustrations. A must have for your little ones library!

My daughter absolutely loves this book. She hasn't taken a liking to any of the other Eric Carle books, but this one she really loves. She enjoys doing each of the motions on each page and mimics each animal. This is a perfect book for 2 year olds and is becoming a new staple in our bedtime book routine!

My children 2, 4 & 6 years old, LOVE this book.
They get so silly and goofy. It gets them up and moving in funny positions. If we read this at night, we read it FIRST before the more mellow books. It is just so silly and fun. It is in their top 10 favorite books.

A brand new edition with beautiful color photographs just in time for the holidays - this has been my go-to-gift for traveling friends. I love the original 1000 Places world book by the same offer, but this is the perfect reference for the wonders to be found in our North American backyard.

Patricia Schultz does a fantastic job of keeping the information up to date and accessible to every kind of budget and traveler. These books are my go to Christmas gift that I know everyone will appreciate. Even the fearful flyer will be able to find numerous destinations they can drive to in this US & Canada book!
