Not that interesting

I was visiting a rancher friend of mine the other day and he told me two very funny Baxter Black stories. Based on that, I went and looked for a representative Baxter Black book and chose this one. Overall, this book was disappointing. It does not have any real stories, just sayings and some of his philosophy. I don't think I really laughed one time while reading the book, and probably didn't even chuckle.

Sol if you're looking for the humorous Baxter Black, look elsewhere.

And just to give an example of what I was looking for, I'll tell one of the stories my friend related to me.

Inez and Evelyn were ranch wives. One evening they were out socializing at the local saloon, talking and having a few drinks. As the evening wore on and it was getting time to go home, Inez turned to Evelyn and said, "Well, Evelyn, are you going to have another one?"

Evelyn looked down and then looked at Inez. "No," said Evelyn, "I think it's just the way my coat is buttoned."

Baxter Black is perhaps better known to the "cowboy" world. Mores the pity for that. He is a refreshing non PC observer of life who will leave you laughing and thinking. If you think you have nothing in common with the riders of the range and providers of our beef think again. You just might become a fan.

Nice Worksheets, One Disappointment

I have been printing worksheets from School Sparks since I started homeschooling my kindergartner last fall. Lots of great preschool and kindergarten worksheets. I recently went to print their dolch flashcards and sentence worksheets for first grade, and when I clicked on the link, a bubble popped up mentioning this book. I have a preschooler this year also, so I decided to go ahead and purchase the book to save on printing.

The worksheets are the same great ones from the website...except they're already printed for you, on a nice weight paper. The pages are perforated so that you can tear them out of the book neatly. My one disappointment (hence the 4 star rating) is that the pages from the website that originally led me to purchasing this book, aren't included in the book. I understand that not every worksheet on the webpage is included, but my feeling is that if you have a pop up on the website saying you can get worksheets in this handy book, that particular worksheet should be included in the book.

Other than that, I love this and will definitely get lots of use out of it.

I just received the book and am really impressed. Lots and lots of worksheets for your preschooler. Its a good value for your money cause it is as thick as a telephone directory. I took of some of the sheet and placed them in sheet protectors so that my kid can redo that worksheet again n again.

Highly recommend if you are looking for prep work that is fun

I have been spending time trying to "home-school" or rather teach my 3 yr old and 2 yr old things they will need for Pre-K and kindergarten. They can count, know their shapes, colors and many basic skills already but I was looking for something that would really help them fine tune the basics as well as help me figure out new things to teach them because I just wasn't sure of what to do next. I was looking into online programs but nothing seemed to be a good fit for me and our schedule. This book has been great. For my 3yr old, the way its laid out gave me a real understanding of what "skills" means: fine motor skills, recognition etc. not just how to count or memorize. My 3yr old enjoys working in the book and taking out the sheets. Its things she recognizes like letters and numbers but is learning about them in different ways such as tracing or matching and even math and graphs. She literally can spend about an hour easily doing sheet after sheet. While she doesn't do every activity perfect, I see that it gives her confidence as she moves on to the next activity and each time I see her getting better and better.

My 2-yr old gravitates to the simple pictures and easily grasps most of the concepts like matching, shadows, coloring and counting.

As someone who was using a lot of online tools and videos, this is a solid foundation you can't get from online or video learning.

About the Author
STEPHEN H. HALL is a Senior Staff Engineer at Intel Corporation, where he leads a team focused on the research of new modeling and measurement solutions for channel speeds as high as 30Gb/sec. Previously at Intel, he was the lead designer for desktop and server buses on Pentium II, III, and IV based systems, coordinated research in the area of high-speed signaling with multiple universities, led research and development teams in the area of high-speed modeling, and taught signal integrity courses to engineers in two countries. He is also the author of High-Speed Digital System Design (Wiley).

HOWARD L. HECK is a Principal Engineer at Intel Corporation, where he leads development of the signaling specifications and solutions for USB 3.0. He also teaches high-speed digital interconnect design at the Oregon Graduate Institute, is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and holds five patents in the area of high-performance packaging and interconnects, with five more pending.

An excellent and timely summary of signal integrity issues

Heck and Hall have done a fantastic job in summarizing both the theory and practice of solving today's SI issues. The math behind topics such as linear network theory, frequency-dependent dielectric effects and filter design for equalization is rigorous, yet ample space is set aside for practical guidance as well. Of particular note is their thorough treatment of hot PCB SI topics as dielectric loss and surface roughness modeling, and preservation of causality in transmission line models. Transmitter and receiver equalization (DFE and CTLE) are well-described, as are analysis techniques such as peak distortion and bit-error rate. Finally, their summary of response surface modeling (RSM) approaches to desgn of experiments (DOE) is perhaps the first and certainly the most comprehensive overview of those methods as applied to PCB SI design available today. A book well worth purchasing if you are involved in SI modeling, SI simulation or PCB design.

Excellent book

This book is an indepth detailed and mathematical explanation of signal integrity. I fully recommend this book to learn about the basics and the details of signal integrity. I started reading this book with a background of electronics but only a brief understanding of signal integrity. This book got me up to speed with everything I need to know for the modern electronics industry and provides an important reference in my library. I fully recommend it.
The only failing of the book is that it can be a little too mathematical. With completely equations of various effects provided but nothing useful (if less accurate) that you can use on a day-to-day basis to make design decisions with.

Great information, but difficult formatting

The book has some great information, but the formatting could be much friendlier. Often there are 3 or more equations for the same calculation that are used as the material is introduced and additional complicating factors are included, but that is not made clear, leaving confusion about which form of the equation should be used. Reformatting to introduce the important final result, then working through the development of the result would be good. Or some other formatting method to make the important final result equations and summary stand out from the intermediate simplified steps

About the Author
Irving Stone was born in San Francisco on July 14, 1903. He wrote several books in a genre that he coined the “biographical novel,” which recounted the lives of well-known historical figures. In these novels, Stone interspersed biography with fictional narrative on the psychology and private lives of his subjects. He also wrote biographies of Clarence Darrow and Earl Warren, and short biographies of men who lost presidential elections. He died on August 26, 1989.

Making History Exciting

What makes this edition special is that its the only one I know of that has photos of most of Michaelangelo's artwork that are described in the book.
This edition is a nice, full hefty book, and comes in a thin cardboard box-cover. Nice esp for people who love the book. Since it's 1963 it won't be sleek & new, but I covered mine in a nice heavy plastic and that makes it sleek.
My complaint is with the reproductions being occasionally not as clear as they could be- some of the black-and-whites are too dark.
But there is no other edition I know of that has all the pictures like this one.

The title makes it sound like it's going to be sentimental- but instead it's a very large, moving biography of Michelangelo, told like an exciting story. When you write a biography like a story, so much has to be "filled in" by the author, since we participate in Michelangelo's daily life, conversations and thoughts. So I guess you could call it fictionalized-- but it really seems to represent the spirit of the man. After you read this you will be so "high" on Michelangelo you will go look up every statue!

The author gives his opinions- his way of understanding the statues is brilliant, you will never see these ideas anywhere else. It really made me understand the man and his statues well beyond simple admiration.

This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read, especially the exciting chapter on how he carved the David, "The Giant"- imagine a description of carving a statue being told like an adventure! He brings his intelligent analysis and emotions to the scene and it's is one of the most fascinating things I've ever read.

A Masterpiece of a Book

I originally purchased this book out of curiosity. I wanted to learn about and study a genius' life. A lover of art and design, I was naturally drawn to Michelangelo. After a substantial research on the best biographies based on his life and work, I was more than convinced that this book was it. And it didn't disappoint me at all!

I had never been to Italy when I started reading. A few months later, my sister and I planned a weekend in Europe, and partly because of this book, I convinced my sister we had to spend a weekend in Rome. Shortly after, I spent a week in Florence, and it was the very first time I felt like an informed tourist, knowing what I was marveling at.

The Agony and the Ecstasy is a novel-like biography of Michelangelo intertwined with historical accounts and facts about his life. It is written in such a way you won't want to put the book down. I felt like I lived inside Michelangelo's head; like I really got to know his person, simultaneously studying art and design history. It's set during the Italian Renaissance, and Michelangelo was a central figure of that glorious period. The book is filled with information. So far, it is the most substantial book I've read, and it's the first time I've taken my time reviewing a book.

The book is by no means an easy read; It took me weeks to finish. In fact, when I first bought it, I had to set it aside before I made it halfway, and I had to re-read it from the start. As I read the last pages, my heart ached as Michelangelo was getting weaker and weaker. It was quite an experience feeling like I lived side by side such a genius. All the masterpieces he forged during his life—just wow!

This book has sparked a deeper interest in me for art and design, and now for a newfound love: sculpture.

One of the best books I've ever read

This book depicts one of the most fascinating eras in human history and makes us feel as if we are there.
All that unique period of the Reneaissance,- the glorious time of "Rebirth",- about 500 years ago, just when Columbus discovered America,- reviving the classical visual arts of ancient Greece and Rome,- with its most outstanding artists as well as highest-ranked religious persons,- popes, monks, rebels, and also military leaders and kings,- is painted on a vast canvas in front of the flabbergasted reader, providing a panorama of southern Europe at that time,- teaching him also about the daily life in Italy, its special foods, its dresses, its professions, its customs, its views, its architecture, its proverbs.
The English is classical yet clear and flowing.
The characters come alive through witty descriptions, the author also provides many facts about the beaux arts,- about marble, frescoes, painting, enlarging, perspectives, stone-cutting, sculpting,- all that as if by the way, without imposing and without becoming too scholarly, though he'd researched those subjects for years.
One discovers the secret religious, artisctic and psychological codes that lie behind each masterpiece, seeing them with refreshed opened eyes even after having known them for years from albums and classes.
The presumptuous tiitle is correct, indeed, emphasizing the agony but mostly the ecstasy of the artist, filling such lofty words with true meaning, connecting earth and heaven, being highly instructive yet colorful, dramatic, balanced.
And above all towers the wonderful man, Michelangelo, whose struggles become exemplary.
By depicting the masterpiseces of this creator of the most famous sculptures in the world,- the giant "David", the radiating "Moses", the heart-rending "Pieta",- the author Irving Stone (Stone!- What a fortunate "coincidence"!) created his own great masterpiece, touching the vary origins of life,- the rock from which we cut out our civilization,- our cities and houses,- with raw passion, tender love, and eternal faith.
I'd already read the book once, but had to purchase it so I could have it at home with me in my possession, and read it again and again, enjoying every moment. Highly recommanded, from every aspect!!!! Also a great gift for everyone who strives to pave his own individual way in life notwithstanding its dangers and disappoinmtments.

About the Author
Graham Oakes helps people untangle complex technology, relationships, processes and governance. As an independent consultant, he helps organizations such as Sony Computer Entertainment, The Open University, the Council of Europe and the Port of Dover to define strategy, initiate projects and hence run those projects effectively. Prior to going independent, he was Director of Technology at Sapient Limited, where he ran the project review process for the UK Business Unit. Before that he was Head of Project Management for Psygnosis Ltd (a subsidiary of Sony), where he ran Independent Project Assurance teams working across the UK, Europe and the USA. Graham writes a regular column for EvaluationCentre.com (now part of the National Computer Centre), and occasional articles for publications such as the Financial Times, Free Software Magazine and Project magazine. He was a medallist in the British Computer Society IT Consultancy of the Year Awards for 2007.

Performing a review: this is your starting point

If you become responsible for assurance of projects and programmes, Graham Oakes' book is the perfect starting point.
This book will help you to learn from your own mistakes and understand what is really going on in your projects. The core of this book is built around a number of models for review processes and governance. These models have been derived from practice and between the different chapters you will find case studies and examples. You will find four parts:
- Part I, the introduction explaining project success and project failure and the need for project reviews and assurance to help to understand what's really going on in the projects. This part also looks at the different types of reviews.
- Part II looks at the Project review process itself. Effective project reviews needs more structure than a simple meeting or checklist. To add most value, reviewers need to be able to do four things: Agree terms of reference with the review's sponsor, where to look for information, identify what standards and `good practices' they will review against and last they need a clear understanding of what activities they will undertake. These four things are visualized in a systems model for a review. Several chapters will help you to understand and use this review model. The review parameters are explained, organizational learning, the importance of evidence and logistics matter are described. This part was completed with a table with signs of project stress and an extensive review checklist.
- Part III looks at the challenge to performing effective reviews: getting people to act on their findings. It sets out a simple model for mapping spheres of influence. This so-called `governance matrix' will help you to think about who is accountable for which decisions, and hence what sort of information you need to give them. This three level model: Steer, Manage and Execute perfectly fits with the three levels of Prince2 version 2009. In the Prince2 process model we now also see the levels Directing, Managing and Delivering. Next topic is the importance to frame effective findings and recommendations. Make sure you separate facts, interpretation and recommendations. The last chapter discussed the gaps and overlaps in governance. It looks at the way in which Prince2 looks at assurance (responsibility of the Project board) and what role your PMO can play. Assurance and the PMO must complement each other.
- Part IV looks at some of the factors that need to be considered when setting up a project review or assurance function within an organization, both from an organizational perspective as from the individual reviewer or review team perspective. A business case for reviews, the establishment of a review process and options for funding a review or assurance programme are explained.

For me this is a very helpful book, especially the systems model, the `governance matrix', the extensive review matrix and how to perform effective reviews.
