When Maud Martha Brown is seven years old, what she likes even better than "candy buttons, and books, ..and the west sky" are dandelions: "Yellow jewels for everyday studding the patched green dress of her back yard." Maud Martha's nine-year-old sister, Helen, is heart-catchingly beautiful; Maud Martha comforts herself with knowing that what is common - like the demurely pretty dandelion with "only ordinary allurements" - is also a flower. Through pithy and poetic chapter-moments - "spring landscape: detail," "death of grandmother," "first beau," "low yellow," "everybody will be surprised" - Maud Martha grows up, gets married, and gives birth to a daughter. Beautiful Novella

This books makes me think that Sandra Cisneros' "House on Mango Street" had to have been inspired by it. A story is told so carefully and artfully through small stories that build up a big picture of Maud Martha's life. Really beautiful.

Oh, how I wish the wonderful Ms. Brooks would write more novels!
First of all, Maud Martha was written very economically which has caused me to gain a greater appreciation of poetry and concise speaking.
Secondly, Maud Martha is not only written to a female or adult audience, but it speaks to all people of different age groups, races, or walks of life.
I appreciate Gwendolyn Brooks for her nobility and classic style. Hope to see at least one more novel from her.
I have already passed on a few copies of Maud Martha. This has gone on to being my favorite book...EVER!
