About the Author
Dr. Marilyn Bizar is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Secondary Education at National-Louis University in Chicago. A former public school teacher, Marilyn collaborates with a network of 12 Chicago public schools, the Best Practice Network, seeking to implement authentic and challenging teaching methods in classrooms. Along with a team of full-time teacher-leaders, the network offers classroom consulting, staff development workshops, and leadership development for teachers, principals and parents. In 1995, Marilyn helped found the Best Practice High School, a 450-student Chicago Public School that demonstrates on a daily basis, that classroom methodology can make a difference for kids and teachers. Marilyn has co-authored four books, including Methods That Matter with Harvey Daniels, School Leadership in Times of Urban Reform with Rebecca Barr, and Rethinking High School, co-authored with Harvey Daniels and Steve Zemelman, which chronicles the challenges of creating and implementing a new, small high school in Chicago. Marilyn consults and presents in schools and at conferences around the country. She assists schools in examining their high schools for reform and restructuring. Her workshops focus on developing literacy strategies across the curriculum with teaching methods that are learner-centered.

Harvey "Smokey" Daniels has been a city and suburban classroom teacher and a college professor, and now works as a national consultant and author on literacy education. In language arts, Smokey is known for his pioneering work on student book clubs, as recounted in Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups, and Minilessons for Literature Circles. Steven Zemelman's newest Heinemann title is From Inquiry to Action, which combines two of his education passions: Choice-based inquiry approaches and civic action. Steve has worked in many capacities to promote the sustainability of innovative schools in Chicago. For eight years he directed the Center for City Schools at National-Louis University, and he is a founding director of the Illinois Writing Project. He has spearheaded the start of a number of innovative small high schools in the city. His experiences and research in these areas led to his Heinemann book 13 Steps to Teacher Empowerment, coauthored with Harry Ross. Steve has been a frequent collaborator with Harvey "Smokey" Daniels. They have coauthored seven books and videos with Heinemann, including Subjects Matter, Second Edition; Best Practice, Fourth Edition, and The Best Practice Video Companion; Content-Area Writing; Rethinking High School and its companion video; and A Community of Writers. These books are filled with practical strategies for making writing, reading, the content areas, and indeed the life of a school itself into a deeper and richer learning experience for kids. Zemelmen and Daniels are known for immediately useful teaching strategies that range from brief, easy-to-use reflections that help students learn right in class to bigger public-writing projects that can make school truly memorable for kids and teachers alike. This book is a great book to learn about great practices in the classroom. It is not like a normal manual or textbook. It actually is a story, with data, and interviews from all players involved including: parents, students, teachers, school district, etc. It is a great book and I highly recommend it for teacher's that want to better their classroom.

A must-read for high school teachers

We often hear how the elementary schools need to be reformed; very rarely does the reform reach the high school level. Most people think it's too late by then. This book encourages change, and the authors are speaking from experience, not from a textbook. Daniels, et.al., have outlined 11 essentials for running an effective secondary school that focus on students and learning. What a novel idea! They're simple ideas, but their implementation is vital. The book is easy to read, inspirational, and motivating.

While this book was for me an engaging text, it didn't seem to break new ground on what a high school can be. It's a good book though and I'm sure others will like it for its organization and scope.

Building Services and Equipment is a 3 volume work which covers the whole gamut of building services engineering and its associated equipment. The books cover the whole range of required services from carpark drainage to elevator systems and every other conceivable aspect of building services. It is rich in easy to understand text and supplemented with clear and highly detailed visual depictions in every chapter. Its most striking inclusion is the prescence of specific caculations and examples of engineering calculations in a working situation and format rather than an abstract academic format. The books are of extremme benefit to both professional engineers wishing to review building service methods and calculations outside of their specialization, and for students alike, to assist them in seeing engineering theory applied in the real world of construction. Without doubt, in my mind, perhaps the most informative reference of building services available (which does not specialize in one specific area). No engineer should be without this publication.

Very helpful for Kaizen Event planner

This authors provide a comprehensive guidance to Kaizen Event. Specifically, I like the arrangement of chapters in accordance to the event process (Preparation, Execution, Wrap-up, and Follow-up). Chapter 12-15 are the best part of the book because these chapters describe clearly about the roadmap of office Kaizen project. Excellent.
I expect to see a real example of Kaizen Event planner in Appendix in future.

The continuous-time detection is covered superficially but it may give a good idea of the theorems for non-expert people. Grab Poor's book instead if you want a more detailed explanation on the later.

As an introduction book is totally worth the money.

The problem this book has is the printed quality. It sucks!
It actually looks like a faxed document!
I don't know if CRC press is trying to save money or what, but the print is the worst ever. With this problem, the reading of te book is exhausting, taking more time to read it because you need to take breaks to avoid headaches.

Bad publisher

The publisher (CRC Press) has ruined a good book by using cheap, low quality materials. Graphs don't show up in the book and a lot of the text is literally falling off the page. I went back to the book store where I purchased the book to get an exchange, but all of their books are doing the same thing. It's a shame that $120 can only get you a poor quality book.

Good guide for those looking for formal methods that are actually useful

This book describes Alloy, a tool for specifying and analyzing data structures and other relationships within your programs. The book walks you through a tutorial, showing you how you can find the bugs in your specifications before you actually write any code, and then goes into the details of the language and its semantics.

I think I was exactly the target audience for this book (and the Alloy language), as I write a lot of Java software and have been looking for a practical specification tool. I've heard of other people who were less happy with this book, as they were trying to learn _about_ Alloy rather than learning Alloy itself. There is some material at the beginning and end that compares and contrasts Alloy with other specification languages, but the real value of this book comes in the middle where it teaches you how to use Alloy effectively.

theoretical but practical

This book does a great job of describing the theory behind Alloy -- the relational logic, the concepts, the overarching motivation --- while connecting it to real-world practical examples. It's suitable for both academics and engineers, theoreticians and practitioners. The latest edition is updated for the new Alloy 4 syntax, which includes a number of small improvements and simplifications over the prior version.

You probably want the printed edition. Unfortunately, the Kindle edition version is the older the first edition.

This is not Amazon's fault -- MIT Press site has no ebook version of the second edition.
