Illusion in humanity

A unique format for a one-act play, Eugene O'Neill's Hughie reads more like a short story than a play because of the very lengthy monologues. There are two characters, Erie, a 40ish year old man, small town gambler, lonely soul, boaster, and a run down hotel clerk who merely listens without listening.

The setting is New York, between 3-4 a.m. in midtown New York, a deteriorating hotel built by 1910. The night clerk is new to the job, and focuses on the sounds of the streeets, the city. He encounters Erie Smith, a small town gambler and known to the night clerk as 492. Erie Smith comes back the the hotel and spends the evening discussing Hughie, the previous night clerk who died recently.

We learn all about Hughie through Erie. Hughie was a family man, with children, he was trusting, and led a simple life. Erie was a bragger, an illusionist, low down gambler who has it one day and gone the next. Erie's life is a stark comparison to Hughie's. Erie's keeps letting the night clerk know what a sucker Hughie was, believe anything, a sap, poor.

The reader learns how Hughie's character was important to Erie's ego, confidence. The story hooks the reader in from beginning to end. This was not one of the most popular plays, but very impressive in its format.

Eugene O'Neill died in 1953 and was an honored man with three Pulitzer Prizes for Drama and the Nobel Prize for Literature. This lengthy play, written in late 40s was performed in mid 60s. Jason Robards performed the role as Erie Smith in 1964.

One of the comments on the back cover says it pretty aptly: "A compassionate, shattering character study, more short story than play." This is basically a 30-page monologue by one of the characters, with an occasional interjection by the other. It centers around the feelings of Erie (the main character) for the previous night clerk at the hotel where he lives (Hughie), who has died. I found it hard to really like Erie, and I was disappointed with the sudden transformation of the new Night Clerk at the end. However, it has to be said that this play would be great for choosing a monologue for acting class or an audition.

Hughie All The Way!

My class had to read Hughie as an assignment. I have read Beyond the Horizon and have fallen in love with the complete intimacy in which O'neill writes his plays. He used personal experience and showed us a new way to think. This is an incredible play to read and even better on stage.

One of the best books I have read on the novel.

Peter Brooks shows, through a series of sensitive analyses of ninetenth and twentieth century novels (and also Freud's case history of the "Wolf Man") what can be got out of novels by attending to what is sometimes thought to be the dryest, most uninteresting thing about them: their plots. Brooks' main argument is that "plot" is not something static - like a skeleton keeping a story together - but something that is continually shaping and being shaped by stories as they develop through time. Brooks main mentor in this book is Sigmund Freud, but Reading for the Plot is very far from the kind of psychoanalytic criticism that seeks to explain Hamlet's neuroticisms in terms of his relationship with Gertrude. Rather, Brooks relates Freud's theories to narratives themselves, showing how, for example, narratives simutaneously engender and thwart readers' desire for "closure." The essay on Dickens' Great Expectations is particularly illuminating, probably because Great Expectations is a novel whose very title describes the kind of plot-philia Brooks is talking about.

About the Author
R. MOHAN MATHUR is Vice President, Training Support and Services Division, Ontario Power Generation, Toronto, Canada. Until 1999 he was Dean, Faculty of Engineering Science and Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, where he continues to be a Professor Emeritus. For over two decades he has been engaged in research in the area of electronic controllers for power transmission systems, including ac/dc converters and active and reactive power compensators for ac transmission lines.

RAJIV K. VARMA is Professor of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. He was awarded the Government of India BOYSCAST Young Scientist Fellowship in 1992-93 to conduct research on FACTS at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. Since then he has maintained active research collaboration with researchers at the University of Western Ontario. With Wayne Litzenberger he has coedited two editions of the Annotated Bibliography of HVDC Transmission and FACTS Devices, 1994-95 and 1996-97. For preparing the Second Edition, he was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship of U.S. Educational Foundation in India to travel to the United States. His teaching and research interests include Flexible AC Transmission System and Power System Stability. He is a member of the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada.

Involved Fathering and Men's Adult Development deserves to be required reading for developmental family studies courses. Marriage and family therapy classes would find the book useful in gaining an understanding of the complexities of the roles men have and the choices they make. Men in counseling could benefit from reading the book to see that they are not alone in their struggle to place fathering, the family, work, friends,and community in balance withing their lives. I highly recommend this book to all.

A new way of looking at fatherhood

"Involved Fathering'' works on several levels. It is an academic study that's easy for ordinary parents to read because the writing is to-the-point. This original research shows that involved fathers change for the better as a result of the time they spend with their children. Everyone knows parenting has an effect on children, and now, thanks to Rob Palkovitz, we know parenting also has an effect on parents. I enjoyed reading how a truly diverse group of individual fathers view their parenting experiences.
