Many characterized Christianness as both fixed and fluid-it had a real essence (fixed) but could be acquired through conversion (fluid). Buell demonstrates how this dynamic view of race and ethnicity allowed Christians to establish boundaries around the meaning of Christianness and to develop universalizing claims that all should join the Christian people.

In addressing questions of historiography, Buell analyzes why generations of scholars have refused to acknowledge ethnic reasoning in early Christian discourses. Moreover, Buell's arguments about the importance of ethnicity and religion in early Christianity provide insights into the historical legacy of Christian anti-Semitism as well as contemporary issues of race.

Ethnicity and Race in First Century Christianity

Buell is without a doubt a good scholar and her thesis is both interesting and provocative. The major problem with this book is the writing. I can attribute the problems in reading and understanding to a decisive postmodern penchant for words, with little concern for meaning. In fact, the author gives no definitions, and the reader is forced to engage in a lot of skillful mining of the material to find the kernel of truth hidden away. I cannot help but give an example of what I mean.

"The conceptualization that I have adopted in this book of race and ethnicity as being characterized by both fixity and fluidity suits the prismatic approach because it highlights the shape-shifting instantiations of these complexly interrelated concepts without insisting that they have any intrinsic essence." (p. 168).

In the end the question is one of consistency and clarity. While she makes every effort to dissolve boundaries, many of the examples she uses, like Martyr and others, do their best to erect boundaries, and very clearly define both Jews and Christians in racial and ethnic terms. Her answer it to reject a metaphorical reading of those who disagree. After such a wordy and detailed treatment the reader is left wondering if her effort was worth the time and expense.

About the Author

Valerie L. Gaus, PhD, has been a practicing cognitive-behavioral therapist serving adults and adolescents with dual diagnosis (intellectual disability with comorbid psychiatric disorder), autism spectrum disorders, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders since she received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Stony Brook University in 1992. Since then she has maintained a private practice on Long Island, New York, and serves as the staff psychologist for the Vincent Smith School in Port Washington, New York. Dr. Gaus is on the advisory board of the Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association, the grant review committee of the Organization for Autism Research, and the adjunct faculty at Long Island University/C. W. Post. She was also a founding board member of the New York Metro chapter of the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed. Dr. Gaus has written numerous articles and book chapters on mental health issues in developmental disabilities and has lectured extensively on these topics across the United States and abroad.

Much needed book

This book is more academic in style than Tony Attwood’s Complete Guide to AS and is written for therapists; nevertheless, there is some good information here for family members (I'm the mother of an adult "Aspie") for whom there is little available that focuses on adults with AS. Gaus, who practices in Long Island, NY, gives an overview of the complex mental health needs of this often-misunderstood population, who face a social world in which rules and expectations appear to be crystal clear to everyone but themselves. She explains how the therapist can use CBT to address their challenges of frequent anxiety and depression. Most helpful to me are the transcriptions of her sessions, noting how she skillfully and respectfully interacts with her clients.
Gaus notes what I have noticed in my daughter (and she recognizes in herself): “The one cognitive distortion that is found in every patient with AS I have met is all-or-nothing thinking. There are no ‘shades of gray.’ People are evaluated as either good or bad, nice or mean, and smart or stupid. There is a low tolerance for uncertainty.”
Gaus says, “Adult patients with AS who have chosen to enter psychotherapy are survivors. The older they are, the longer they have lived with myriad problems in an overwhelming world and without any good explanation as to why the simplest things in life are such a struggle for them. When I hear their stories, I am often surprised by the persistence of some to keep trying to improve their lives, despite an immeasurable amount of pain. I often felt the urge to ask, ‘How the hell did you manage to come this far?’ – but I didn’t say that out loud.” She goes on to say, “The long history of struggles and traumatic experiences that is so common to these patients is exacerbated by the fact that they have rarely had anyone to talk to about it. The validation that people typically get from natural supports such as friends and family is not as available to many with AS.”
LIke Attwood, Gaus loves working with those with AS. Her closing words to fellow therapists: “I have been continually fascinated with the peculiar workings of the AS mind ever since 1995, and I wish for you to equally enjoy working with these unusual but delightful patients.”

Insightful Book and Must Read if You Have Adult Asperger Syndrome or Know Someone That Does.

Many adults slipped through the cracks and failed to get an accurate diagnosis 20 or 30 years ago, when most people never heard of Autism. This book is one of the best I've read for help in understanding an adult with Asperger Syndrome. Even if the person with Asperger Syndrome refuses to read it or consider they may be affected, the insight gained from this book to understand how they think is invaluable. It answers many questions family members may have, preventing confusion and misunderstanding. I think it also goes a long way toward removing the stigma for those that have Asperger Syndrome by dispelling some of they myths about a different way of thinking.

Bad Dog!

Winston Churchill popularised the phrase 'the Black Dog', although it had been round for many years before. In a way a black dog, hunting by moonless night in a blackened wood is quite possibly the best metaphor for depression. It hunts silently, stealthily, approaching its victim unseen and unnoticed until it's too late. No one is immune from it - actors, politicians, homeless people, emergency personnel, middle class families, children, the Strong, the weak, etc.

But in between clever euphemism and metaphor and personal experience is the cavernous gulf of ignorance. Even family members who love and care deeply for a person with depression can find themselves without understanding - bewildered by what from the outside seems such a minor thing. The gulf in understanding, the lack of support from people who just 'don't understand', can lead to the unconsenting and unwilling owner of a Black Dog to feel isolated and alone and utterly abandoned. The Black Dog wants nothing more than to keep family and friends away, to make the owner believe that no one does or even can understand what it's like. That no one cares and there is no helping hand. And once there in the cold dark lair of the beast it saps the life from it's victim.

But it is not true that no-one can understand - survivors know what it is like. Survivors like Johnstone. After years of struggle with his back dog he wrote this short picture book. And what a book it is. He puts simply and vividly what it is like for those who must struggle every day. How the Black Dog colours the world and freezes the soul, destroying joy and chasing away happiness. But he doesn't stop there. If the first half is for the family the second half is for the owners themselves. He show how with determination, exercise, meditation, and support the owner can shrink the fat lazy mutt from a snarling Cerberus into a shivering little purse dog attached firmly to a leash by the owners side.

As Johnstone says in his dedications "and a very small, begrudging, thank you to the black dog, without whom this book would not be possible. Bad Dog!"(less)

The book is a cute way to describe depression, but I don't think it is really helpful. It may be something to show family or friends but I don't think anyone will get the seriousness of depression from it.

Worst math book you'll ever see

A very common agreement in my math class between students is how awful this book is. The book chooses to lead every section by 5-10 examples with a few sentences explaining what is going on. What the book fails to do for any topic is go into detail the logic and reasoning behind what we're doing. The book uses the idea that all we need to do is see HOW something is done to learn how it'll be done in a way the book doesn't show us. There are a ton of questions for the reviews and tests that were not even close to any of the examples in the books but yet we are supposed to know how to do things in a different way without ever being explained WHY things are how they are.

There are videos that come with the book but don't bother putting them on your computer. It's NOT video, it's one frame every 5-8 seconds while the audio streams so you INSTANTLY become confused when he's writing something on the board and it freezes.. but yet you hear him explaining further steps without ever seeing it on screen. It's not my computer, it's how they set up the cd.

No one in my class likes this book, I've done all my learning from web sites since chapter 2 because the book is absolutely not written by a math instructor.

Too Pricey

Disagree with me or not for rating a book based on price, however, my college course requires this text and it is absolutely absurd that a publisher would promote an Intermediate Algebra book for $200 dollars. They obviously build these text books for student's therefore it's sad that the love for profit is more important than the burden of paying for classes and this ridiculously priced book. I'm really not how much trigonometry and algebra changed in the last few decades or centuries.

Rented this book, and sent it back. They charged me two extensions. And then eventually charged me the whole book. Now I have no way of contacting them and I don't even have the physical book. So basically I paid around 200+ for a book I don't have. Thanks a lot. Never renting again.

About the Author
Jim Clover is an Adjunct Professor at California State University, San Bernardino and Retired teacher at Riverside County of Education Career Technical Program for 20 years. Coordinator Riverside Medical Clinic's Sports Clinic and SPORT Foundation, Mr. Clover coordinates sports medicine services for 40 schools in Southern California. He invented the Trainer's Angel (a cutting tool to remove football helmets in emergencies) and received the NATA's Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2004. In addition to a holding a Master's Degree in Education, he is an NATA Certified Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapy Assistant, and NASM Corrective Exercises Specialist.
