It's the money stupid

Sorry. I'm a big Holly Bush fan but this story is just dumb. Jolene 's husband has just died and he has left most of his 50 million dollars to his out of wedlock child. Poor Jolene has to struggle by on a mere $75000 a year. Which for her would have been a comedown it's true but how did he wind up with 50 mil. He had basically been a clerk in her father's bank when he married her. He still worked for her father. She is supposed to be pretty clever. I found it hard to believe that her father didn't have some financial restrictions in place to protect her.

Then there is the hero who has been widowed 10 years. He wants to be a senator in Texas. He is educated and from a good Boston family but has gone to Texas and made his fortune in oil and cattle. He thinks he should get a wife for political reasons and to help make a lady out of his 12 year old tomboy daughter. So his sister suggests Jolene. Jolene is no dummy . She says she'll do it but wants 20 million dollars up front. So dumbo sends her 20 million and marries her by proxy sight unseen. Doesn't even ask for a picture. Seriously. TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS. Mind you this is in 1891. God only knows what that would be in today's dollars.

Even if Jolene had been likable. Which she isn't. Why would the H do such a thing. I don't care how busy you are you'd want to have a conversation with someone you intended to marry. Especially if your looking for a role model for your daughter. This was not some poor rancher ordering a mail order bride this was a rich Texan with more money then brains. Granted his sister recommended her but how many brothers take their sisters advice about picking a wife. Though if they did it would make holiday dinners a lot more enjoyable.

If snarky heroines who never smile or eye rolling gives you a headache you may want to skip this one.

Another Winner From Holly Bush

We first meet Jolene Crawford Crenshaw in Holly Bush's debut Crawford Family book, Train Station Bride. Jolene was the utterly mean sister to heroine Julia. How does an author take a character who was so disliked and turn her into a heroine? Well, Holly Bush knows the secret, and she does so in the second epic tale of the Crawford Family, Contract to Wed.

It's now Boston, 1891, and socialite Jolene Crawford Crenshaw has become a widow. She has already suffered loss that has made her bitter, but to be insulted further by her deceased husband's will, Jolene must make a choice, stay in Boston and be ridiculed by her malicious mother and by society, or to start over elsewhere.

Wealthy Texas Rancher, Maximilian Shelby has been a widower for sometime, his beloved wife died, leaving him with a small daughter to raise and now that the spitfire, Madeline is almost thirteen, Max needs someone to take his daughter into hand and also assist him in his political aspirations to become Senator. When his sister, Eugenia, who lives in Boston, tells him about the misfortunes that have befallen the widowed Jolene, he marries her by proxy after agreeing to a long list of demands that the irksome Jolene has sent him.

When Jolene arrives in her new town and meets her new husband for the first time, she is pleasantly surprised Max is so amiable and handsome. She is not happy, however, to find that the daughter, who she believed was of a marriageable age, to be only twelve. Jolene has no intention of being a mother again, not after suffering the terrible loss that holds heavily on her heart.

Max sees the beautiful and sophisticated, Jolene and immediately feels a twinge of attraction to her. Even after his pledge to never love again after his Melissa passed away, Max can't help but see the possibilities of growing his relationship with Jolene. But Jolene tries desperately to hold Max to a distance. She is after all, a product of the cold and demeaning Boston upbringing in the Crawford household. Nary a word of praise passed from her mother's lips in the time she spent with her parents. Then she went to her first husband's home, discovering a betrayal that forever changed the way she felt about him. Even with his death, the joke was on her when he leaves the bulk of his millions to her sister, Julia's child, cementing the betrayal once suffered.

Now, Jolene finally has a chance to start anew, but because of her past, she can't take at face value what is right in front of her. She constantly looks for reasons to dwell on the sorrow and the loss, instead of grasping the good. Max, the ever patient husband, knows Jolene has suffered greatly, although he doesn't know all her secrets, he is willing to put his past behind him and solidify his new family. Will these star-crossed lovers find their way? Read Contract to Wed, by Holly Bush to find out.

Well I guess you all can gather from my review, I simply love this book. I can honestly admit that I have never been let down by one word that Holly Bush has ever written. Ms. Bush's writing is solid and fraught with emotion. Taking a much hated character and turning the tides on her is an undertaking that Holly Bush has done with success. Max and the menagerie of colorful characters in his Hacienda, makes Contract to Wed a story not to be missed.

Amazing transformation..

I have to admit that I wasn't looking forward to this character's story. If you read the first book, you'll know why and by the way...read that first!

Quick summary
At the end of the first book, Boston socialite Jolene was married to Turner Crenshaw and the mother of three-year old William. When this story begins, she's lost both of them, is facing a serious change in her financial situation and is trying to determine her next direction. When she learns Maxmillian Shelby, a wealthy Texas rancher and oilman, is looking for a wife to help him prepare for a political state-wide office run and is willing to pay handsomely, Jolene jumps at the opportunity.

About Jolene
Jolene is beautiful, socially skilled and exceptionally bright. What she isn't is very nice. She's aloof but polite; emotionally barren but fully attentive; and, not interested in a committed relationship with her husband but is committed to his goals. Max is at first a bit unsettled when he meets his new wife but it doesn't take him long to figure out she's been sorely damaged.

What I loved
I loved the journey Max and Jolene took for her to confront her past, accept who she really is, acknowledge her grief and reach out to those who respected and admired her, in spite of her distance. Max is pretty wonderful and his patience with her was admirable. Unraveling Jolene's past was heart-wrenching and once revealed, brought me to tears.

The bottom line
This is a really special story that transformed my opinion of a pretty unpleasant character whose true spirit rose from the ashes. The romance is wonderful, passionate and inspired. I loved this story and the set up for the next book is intriguing.

Too much and not enough

I came away from this book wondering just who was meant to read it. It starts with "A Crash Course in Java." (Somehow, I never learned to like any "crash" in the context of program design.) This is much too brief to teach the language, or even summarize it well. Any of many other books would be better for teaching Java to C++ programmers.
Next, the book goes through two chapters of object oriented design. These chapters are over in about 100 pages - again, not nearly enough time to address OO design in with any real insight. The OO paradigm is truly different from previous generations of software design, and can not be summed up in a few pages of rote rules.
Worse, the author identifies "javadoc" as a design documentation tool! It is not. Javadoc does a very good job of documenting implementation, but it documents design very badly. If you're not a programmer, trust me - implementation and design are as different as carpentry and architecture. Neither is better than the other, and both are needed to build a house. Implementation is not design, though, and the two require very different documentation.
The rest of of the book continues in an odd pastiche including:
-- ideas the programmer already needed to understand the earlier material,
-- afterthoughts on the Java language, scattered among other topics,
-- a weak discussion of design patterns, and
-- a severely flawed discussion of multithreading.
Only this last deserves attention. Multithreading is a subtle topic. It's easy to write multithreaded code, but very hard to write it correctly. The author actually does a good job of discussing interruption in threads. However, the book's description of synchronization and deadlock is so brief that it leaves me worried - student programmers might read that material and come away thinking they understood the topics. Insufficient knowledge may be worse than none at all, in this case. Most distressing, the author makes no apparent mention of "volatile" data in Java. Multithreaded applications don't need to use volatile data. The programmer MUST understand when volatility is a problem, though, and avoid it or address it directly. It is unacceptable to ignore the risks addressed by "volatile" declarations.
I can not recommend this book. It claims to address object oriented design, Java, and design patterns. I feel that it does an inadequate job on all counts.

I like the book and have taught Spring 2004 Object-oriented Development (CSC 429 ) course at SUNY College at Brockport, New York. I have taught the material from Chapter I through 6. I have also used the material from Ch. 8 Object-Oriented Frameworks for 2 Independent Study Courses with 2 students during Summer 2004.

I find chapters 4 and 5 the best hands on introduction to Design Patterns that makes the corresponding material of The Gang of Four book quite understandable and it is better by far than many other attempts to introduce design patterns. The author plays to an advantage the use of Java and its libraries already based on some of the design patterns that many other authors have not exploited despite existence of Design Patterns presented in Java.

I also find the choice of 5 patterns: Iterator, Strategy, Observer, Composite and Decorator very tasteful as well as very useful. The author's problem examples illustrating the use of design patterns, particularly, the Invoice example is excellent.

The material in Ch. 4 on Interface Types leads to design patterns gracefully, and one can obviously recognize Strategy patter playing important role unnamed yet. This looks to me a good arrangement. Exercises reinforce the ideas very well. If some more exercises will be added that would be a nice improvement.

The author succeeds in making clear the concept of Object-Oriented Frameworks in introductory textbook. Separation of a framework and applications built on it is very well presented. Use of sequence diagrams helps to understand OO Framework. I would suggest that the concept of a Use Case and collaboration diagrams as alternative to sequence diagrams helps to get into the heart of how a framework achieves a goal relevant to a user. An excellent example of such a goal is presented in Ch. 8 for the Graph Framework.

When I was teaching the course I have attempted to replace The Object-Oriented Design Process from Ch. 2 by elements of Craig Larman textbook Applying UML and Patterns (Completely different patterns there than the 5 mentioned above). It helped me to reinforce software engineering concepts taught by Craig Larman that I have taught in software engineering course and also provided good point of view for understanding the OO Frameworks where some of the goals served by an OO Framework are viewed as Use Cases.

I would use the book again for CSC 429 Object-Oriented Development without hesitation should I be teaching this course again. Also, I continue to use OO Design and Patterns as a source of material for Independent Studies.

Finally, I congratulate the author for making available and understandable the concept of Design Patterns as practical way of building OO software at undergraduate level.

An ideal intro to OOD by an insightful author.

The previous reviewer sounds like he is looking for an all in one reference. Indeed, if you are a professional programmer and need a reference book, this one is not for you. However, if you're a student, new to OO programming/design or just want to add to your programming knowledge, this is a perfect book. It's designed for the classroom first (see the preface and exercises!), but is also useful for anyone who learned to program in C++ or Java and wants more sophisticated OO coverage. It is certainly not intended to teach the entire language. Rather, it assumes you already know how to program and want to learn more about Object-Oriented Design, including UML and design patterns. This is an important topic and it's never been introduced in a clearer, more intersting way than it is in this book.

Raw, gritty, fantastic!

"Dying almost seemed easy; it was everything else that scared me."

This is the second book in the Outside The Ropes series, continuing Regan's story. It's just as raw and gritty as the first, at times even more so with some of the things Regan goes through and deals with.

Regan, God what to say about her?!? She's such a strong, independent, sometimes scary, kickass heroine. Some of her choices are still driving me crazy and breaking my heart. She's been on her own for so long she's still having such a hard time trusting and believing in people. She makes choices that she feels are necessary for her survival, but can't seem to accept that other people, namely Gage, are also doing things to help her out, when all she's trying to do is protect him.
"It didn't matter anyways, I wasn't with him for protection. I just wanted him and I wanted to keep him safe too."

It was frustrating to see her pushing him away, again and again, not believing in him.
"Mostly I regret giving my soul to a woman who doesn't give a f@#$."
They are at odds with each other through most of the book, and although at times Gage's choices seemed questionable, everything he did was for her, for them.
"I'd do anything for you. Anything."

I wasn't sure how much more my poor heart could handle as I read this book- the angst, the danger, the secrets...everything finally coming to a head.The action in this book is non-stop, I didn't know what was coming next! It's a thrill ride that will keep you guessing and turning the page.

I am completely hooked on this series, Ashley has created such fantastic characters I cannot wait to see what is in store for them in OtherSide Of Fear, that little tease at the end of this book was amazing!

Ashley & Cliffhangers! Good thing she writes such an amazing story! LOL

I can't decide how much I hate Gage right now! "Outside the Ropes" by Ashley Claudy was an amazing read. We met Gage and Regan, two very tragic characters that had somehow found each other and are willing to fight some pretty awful outside forced intent on tearing their lives apart.

Book 1 left on a mild cliffhanger, Regan finds herself a target for some of the most vile creatures roaming the streets of Washington DC. Now in "Inside Danger," seeking revenge is the only thing she can focus on but in order to get it, she has to make a deal with the devil. Goodness these characters are so evil! Killing with no conscience, abuse in every form. Regan can only hope to turn to Gage for some sort of peace but Gage has his own ideas on how he can save Regan. He's so cold and cruel, pushing Regan away in an attempt to do what he feels he needs to do.

This was a HUGE issue for me with these two people. Their feelings and love are obviously apparent but neither trusts the other enough to tell them their plan. There is ZERO communication! UGGGGG

"Inside Danger" was full of suspense and intrigue. There are many twists and turns you will never see coming. Anatoli Rusnak is the devil himself. Just when you think you know the truth, you have no idea. That's when Ashley pulls her ever so sudden cliffhanger and your left with a serious WTF face.

I've set the calendar for when "Other Side of Fear" comes out. I can only hope Gage and Regan find their happily ever after or at least the peace they both deserve.

Let me start off by saying... woah. This book is one hell of a ride. In most trilogies you usually expect the second book to be the breather book, the one to sit back and relax in, but this book was a whole different ball game.

Inside danger maintained a completely different dynamic throughout. Where outside the ropes was reasonably lighthearted, focusing slightly more on Regan and Gage's relationship, Inside Danger had a darker feel and vibe, becoming more involved in Gage's old life.

This change doesn't make it any worse though. In fact it makes it even better. Seeing both Regan and Gage grow through every single hardship they battled made me smile like a proud parent. At times I wanted to punch them for being so boneheaded and thick-skulled. And yet other times I found myself falling even deeper in love with them. And that's what makes this series different to any other book out there. The characters are so real and human that you almost forget that you're not there with them.

Regan has always been one of my all time favourite female protagonists. Throughout the entire book, Regan finds herself stuck between a wall and a hard place, where every choice she makes seems only to make her situation worse. Yet she still manages to stay strong, fighting to protect herself and Gage, never showing weakness. I've always respected Regan for her determination and strength, even when I wanted to punch her (though let's be honest, she'd probably punch me back)

And GAGE *groans* where can I find me a Gage?! He gets even hotter in this book (if that's even possible). His possessiveness of Regan had me lying on the ground in a puddle. And he let his sweet side show more in this book as well, making me fall for him harder and faster. Admittedly he made me fuming mad several times during the book, but I found myself forgiving him before I could blink, at the flex of a muscle or batt of an eyelash. And everything he did for Regan more than made up for it.

All in all this book delivered on a whole different level to the first one, dealing with darker and rougher issues, but drawing you in and keeping you captivated all the same. Go buy this book. You will not regret it :)

And one thing you can expect is when they fall, they fall so hard that they will do anything they can for the woman they love. This book is part of a series and is a standalone but I promise you will want to read them all.
Day Reader Reviews: I can not express how much I love the Alvarez Security men and what they stand for. You will not be disappointed reading Jobe. Jobe holds true to everything Alvarez Security represents and the image they have formed. Great family and friends and they all take care of what is theirs and loved ones of their brothers. A must read, and make sure to read the entire series if you haven't already!

Best One Yet!

In this last installment of this series this author gives it to you with both barrels right between the eyes. She starts it out with a more in depth look of what happened with Jobe and the anguish he experiences that leads to some pretty serious consequences. Now a few years later some of the guys are leading a different life while even though they are all still a tight group he is on the outside looking in at times. His mom though has some mighty strong prayers she has sent because things will change quicker than a eye can blink. Mackenna stays a busy woman with her job at Social Services and New Beginnings along with living with her mom who has her own set of challenges. Once her friend finds out her security issues at New Beginnings whom her husband happens to work for Alvarez security, she assures her that it could be a write off if they take care of it. Since they are also working with the police department on gang issues this would go along with it sort of. Since working with girls who want to leave the gang life behind might bring issues of its own they just gotta do it with Jobe leading it. Ah how their faces must of looked when they came face to face-Jobe and Mackenna. In this one she will give us one spectacular second chance romance that will be filled with danger and suspense. This time though it will be alittle different for the guys because they feel like they let Jobe down too so they all will do anything they can to stand together with him any way he needs. So with all that being said this one will take them to the top with a bang. Gang life is hard and usually ends bad but she doesn't sugar coat it in here so that is why it will hit home maybe for a few. She will also give it her life and blood while she gives us her best in this one wrapping it all up for us the readers.

Rich & Rewarding Second Chance Romance

Jobe Delaro dedicated his life to serving his country but when a mission goes wrong it breaks something in his mind and soul. Struggling for control Jobe succumbs to his pain and throws away the love of his life, his fiancee Mack. Though therapy and the support of his brother's in arms at Alvarez Security help him come to terms with his PTSD, Jobe can't forget the love he lost.

Mackenna Dunn hasn't let the damaged heart Jobe left behind keep her from her mission to help girls in need. When her work helping young women escape gangs makes Mack a target to a powerful gang leader, a friend guides her to the men of Alvarez Security... and Jobe.

Can the two let go of the ghosts of the past to keep Mackenna safe or will the pair only reconnect to be cruelly separated once more?

What I Loved: Jobe and Mackenna's second chance romance is a rich and rewarding one. I loved how their heart breaking past together didn't end their chances for a happy future but it also didn't lead to insta-love. The pair had a strong connection and put real work into redefining what they meant to each other. I also enjoyed how all of the secondary characters helped the pair remember their importance to each other.

What I Didn't Love: There are several scenes in Jobe told through the POV of male gang members and those scenes include some intense violence and sexual assault. Though it fit the theme of the story, it was a little difficult to read.

great series , great story , love me a second chance

These 4 men of Alvarez Security have found their true loves and gotten their HEA's , regardless they have all been through the struggles with each other and this story gives us quite the struggle from all sides. Mackenna and Jobe are both forces to be reckon with. Their past connection haunts them , Jobe's decision making in the past ruined them and haunts them both and now Mackenna's job sticks Jobe right in the center of her life as protection most definitely needed for the trouble she has gotten into with the local gangs.

5 years ago while Jobe was serving his country he saw some pretty heavy stuff , not being able to handle the circumstances he made some poor choices and one of those was a stupid email ending things with the love of his life. When he chose to break that bond he did it cold turkey and never looked back. Mackenna has spent years dealing with her heartbreak and never being able to find anyone she could care for as she did Jobe. Now as Mackenna is making a name for herself by providing a safe place for young girls trying to escape local gangs a mutual friend of her and Jobe sets them on a path of face to face. Much to the surprise of many they come to find that she is the one Jobe left and trying to get him to right his wrongs takes up just as much energy as helping keep Mackenna , her center and her girls safe. Her work is admirable , amazing at that. These girls have been dragged through gang initiations and marked yet they fear their lives and want to get out. Mackenna may be doing a great thing yet she is not realizing just how dangerous it is to allow these girls to leave the gangs. She finds out faster than she wants and with some pretty heartbreaking revelations. We get to see many of the faces we have gotten to know from Alvarez and from the Love series. It is great seeing these guys and their women come together and do right by the towns they live in. Safety isn't the only hurdle being faced , Jobe is determined to get Mackenna back and although she reluctantly accepts his help will she forgive and accept his love again ?? Not an ideal situation yet I loved Jobe and hoped for his happiness. Mackenna was bad A$$ but once she realized the position her attitude put her in we saw the more vulnerable side. They had a great chemistry and I am a sucker for that second chance romance. Again the way Maryann writes took some getting used to but 6 or 7 books into her I am hooked. I also loved getting that little hint of craziness from the gang.

A Great Reference for Early 20th Century Architecture

This book is a replica of ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS FOR EVERY TYPE OF BUILDING: A PRACTICAL DRAFTING ROOM GUIDE FOR CONTRACTORS, BUILDERS, LUMBER DEALERS, MILLMEN, DRAFTSMEN, AND ARCHITECTS published in 1921. The original title is an appropriate one, as it was not intended for the general public looking for house plans or ideas for details but more for the building professional. Today, however, it provides a great reference resource for those interested in restoring or improving an early twentieth century building. For houses, there are some complete working drawing sets in addition to various details for stairs, fireplaces, bookcases, and even fences, among many others. Also included are drawings for an Ice House, a Modern Photo Play House (movie theater), and various Barns. It is highly recommended for those who enjoy technical information.

Very interesting floor plans

I live in an old house and have used this book many times during remodeling. It has been a great reference for how the layout of my house may have changed over the years.
If I were ever going to build a new home, I would use one of these classic floor plans as a guide and make adjustments to make it either larger or more modern. Love the authenticity of this book.

Great reference if you have an old house that you are restoring or adding on to

Just bought a turn of the century house. Great to see old details so if I'm restoring or taking something apart I know what I'm probably dealing with. The only issue I have is that the drawings are crammed on the pages.

Indespensible

Contains a great introduction to the great fast. Has the lenten material for all the 'main' lenten services (i.e. those services one would normally attend at church: Sundays, 1st week of lent, Holy Week,etc.). If you're looking for the daily lenten material to do services such as vespers at home during the week, you'll need the Lenten Triodion Supplementary Texts rather than this book.

Wonderful Book to Own

If you're an Orthodox Christian, that enjoys knowing and understanding the entire service, this book is for you! It clearly contains the prayers in the service and lays them out in order of date. This book and the Holy week Book are essential for Pascha season.
