What I've Waited For!!!

Like most Sopranos fans, I don't start Monday morning at work until my colleagues and I have thoroughly analyzed the episode of the night before. We all have some psych in our background and the discussions are lively and, not surprisingly, clearly include individual projection. Now, an insightful book by a psychoanalyst! Pinch me! This is one of the panel of psychoanalysts who critiques and analyzes on "Slate" after each episode. He provides understanding to story lines and characters that were previously debatable; that is, if you accept that his analysis is the final word! And you may not always.
Why didn't Tony "get" the rapist? Now I know. Why are we all so drawn to this series? Writing is great, sure, but the reasons are much more complex and personal. The relationships are examined and illuminated. Lines and images I've forgotten are brought back, and with clarification. Subtle inclusion of references to classic movies and literature in the lines or settings are examined. Our fascination with Tony is explained in context to what we struggle with personally daily. I now have a logical understanding of why I like this obviously psychopatic killer mobster!
My friends and I have a ritual of providing the best line of the night and we rarely mimic each other. The lines brought back in the book left a smile on my face. Some that I missed or forgot about were hilarious, and I even underlined passages.
This book was a gift from a fellow "Sorpranoette," Courtney Conlin. It fascinated and captivated me. If you are a Sorpranos fan, and especially if you are into analyzing the plots and characters, if you have unanswered questions, if you strive to learn more about human motivations, and most of all your own, you will not be able to put this book down!

For psychology and Sopranos junkies

This entertaining book actually enhanced my viewing experience. I watch the Sopranos on videotape -- gulping down three episodes at a time -- and I gone back to Season 1 with the help of this book. Gabbard picks up nuances that eluded me on first viewing.
Most interesting is Gabbard's portrayal of the therapist, Jennifer Melfi. Not surprisingly, he is pro-therapy. While acknowledging Jennifer's mistakes -- especially her problems with boundaries -- Gabbard insists that Melfi does, after all, recover from those mistakes. And I'm glad he, too, found some of Jennifer's scenes "improbable," such as her visit to her own therapist with her ex-husband and son. He shed some light on the mystery of Carmela's therapist, the man referred by Dr. Melfi who told Carmela to take the kids and leave. Apparently this therapeutic style is based on input from a real therapist who informally consults with the show.
I'm a little puzzled by Gabbard's references to A.J., Anthony Junior, who appears to be in middle school. On the one hand, Gabbard seems a little too forgiving of the psychologist in A.J.'s school, a man who has trouble communicating with laypeople. Telling the parents that A.J. has "five out of nine" symptoms of ADD doesn't help anyone. And I think Gabbard misinterprets a scene where big sister Meadow, from her infinite wisdom as a college student, helps A.J. interpret Frost's famous poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Gabbard says the scene highlights the difference in their academic levels, but I've met few straight teenaged boys who were moved by poetry. If they understand symbolism, they're not willing to admit it.
Gabbard also picks up the verbal cruelty Tony inflicts on his young son: "If this is my male heir -- you want me to have a vasectomy?" Yet he ignores the father-and-son moments between Tony and A.J., such as the night they were squirting whipped cream directly from jar into mouth. And the family does get together for dinner just about every night -- more than a lot of households do.
Just the fact that I, like many readers, will be stimulated to argue and question Gabbard's book shows its strength: Gabbard's analysis is tough and thought-provoking. There was perhaps too much rehash of the Sopranos episodes (with some errors noted by other reviewers) and too little reflection on why television characters have so much influence.
For instance, men have been showing up in therapists' offices in larger numbers since Tony Soprano first met with Dr. Melfi. Do they identify with Tony -- or do they hope to find a gorgeous, brilliant female therapist who wears short skirts as she crosses her legs? And is there a message for female clients here? The women end up with graying, conservative males who'd put most of us to sleep. Next book, maybe.

Insightful and entertaining

As a psychiatrist-in-training who admires Gabbard's writings aimed at mental health professionals, I was interested to see how this book would read. He has managed to write an analysis (pun intended) of the Sopranos that is highly enjoyable as well as enlightening. Although he is writing to a lay audience and has tried to avoid psychoanalytic jargon, this book is not at all dumbed down. You just might find yourself learning something about psychodynamic theory while plumbing the depths of Tony's psyche. I think TV fans and shrinks alike (not to mention those in both categories) will get much out of this book, and have a good time in the process.

BOOK EXCERPT: "What Causes Cancer?"

My approach to cancer; what it is, what causes it, and how to treat it is similar to that of the early 1900s English scientist John Beard, DSc, who developed a ground-breaking theory on cancer over 100 years ago. Conventional medicine believes that cancer develops from mature, healthy cells that go "berserk," mutate, and turn cancerous. Dr. Beard believed that cancer didn't come from mature cells, but from residual trophoblast cells that remain in all of us and which are scattered throughout our tissues and organs.� Embryonic trophoblast cells are the earliest precursors to the placenta; the scattered trophoblast cells in the mature organism serve as stem cells, regenerating new tissues as replacements are needed. They sit quietly most of the time, but can, at some point, start growing just like the placenta, as the result of a stimulus, such as an infection or inflammation, but unlike the placenta, they grow in the wrong place and at the wrong time. And just as the placenta grows and invades into the uterus, cancer cells grow fast and invade local tissues and organs.

When Dr. Beard's view that cancer was caused by misplaced trophoblasts (which are the type of cells produced by the placenta) growing in the wrong place at the wrong time was published in a book nearly 100 years ago, in 1911, people thought that he was crazy, even though he was an eminent university professor who was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1906 for his work in embryology.� Indeed, he was a prominent embryologist, but people thought he had gone off the deep end when it came to cancer.

His theory, however, is similar to what molecular biologists are saying today; that cancer cells resemble misplaced trophoblasts (or placental cells) in many ways. They grow fast like placental cells, produce their blood supply in the same manner as placental cells, and are invasive like placental cells. Much of their molecular biology is identical to placental cells, and they use exactly the same invasive techniques in the body that placental cells use when they invade the uterus.� Additionally, their transcription and other factors are similar so biologists are now beginning to study Beard's early tumor model. (Transcription factors are molecules that are involved in controlling gene expression). So Beard may not have been that far off in his thinking, but it's sad that 100 years of research have been lost in the meantime.� If researchers had listened to Beard back in 1911, knowledge of cancer biology today would be more extensive. At my office, we look at cancer as Beard did.

The second component of Beard's hypothesis was that while the placenta initially grows, develops, proliferates rapidly, invades tissue, and develops a blood supply like a cancer, at some point, it changes completely and stops doing all of these things. The mature placenta is a very benign tissue, and is a necessary link between the embryo and the mother's blood supply in mammals. Cancer is different from placental cells in that it never stops growing and invading--and ultimately kills us, whereas placental cells, at a predetermined point, suddenly change completely and stop behaving like a cancer. Beard spent years trying to figure out what the signal was that caused the placental cells to stop acting like invasive cancer cell tissue, and one day realized that that it was when the embryonic pancreas became active.� This led him to formulate his thesis that pancreatic enzymes control trophoblastic destiny, and since trophoblasts are like cancer cells, and enzymes control trophoblast activity, pancreatic enzymes are useful for controlling cancer and can therefore be used in cancer therapy. So these enzymes became the essence of his therapy.

Interestingly, a lot of molecular biologists, such as Max S. Wicha, MD, at the University of Michigan, also now believe that cancer doesn't develop from mature cells gone "berserk" but from stem cells. Stem cells are used to replace cells that are lost through normal turnover, aging, disease and injury, and their role in cancer development is a hot topic in modern research. We think that these cells are what Beard really identified, because he described the misplaced trophoblasts that he found as being microscopic, primitive, undifferentiated cells that are scattered throughout our tissues, which basically also describes stem cells. So we believe that stem cells were discovered by Dr. Beard in 1902, even though they weren't officially recognized as such until 1960. In summary, Dr. Beard's misplaced trophoblasts are what we today call stem cells, and these are the source of cancer.

The incidence of cancer has increased dramatically in recent years.� I have been in practice for twenty-three years and I have seen things change a lot. When I was in medical school in the early 1980s, I was taught that cancer was an old person's disease. When I started out in practice, I didn't see twenty year-olds with cancer; now I see them almost routinely. Back then, if I saw young adults with cancer, it was usually because they had twenty years of smoking under their belts. But today, I see young adults with breast, metastatic lung, and other types of cancer and these cancers are far more aggressive than they were ten, twenty, or thirty years ago, and I think the reasons are environmental. Just recently, I consulted on a twenty-four year-old patient with metastatic breast cancer, and a twelve year-old with pancreatic cancer. This is happening because the world is more polluted than it used to be, and each year, it gets worse.

Assuming that Dr. Beard's theory about cancer is correct, why would these toxins affect the development of cancer in a person? He wrote in his book 100 years ago that any type of inflammation, irritation or toxic exposure could cause these immature trophoblast cells to start dividing. So, whether you believe that cancer is caused by mutations of mature cells or by trophoblasts, there is no question that environmental toxins stimulate cancer growth. And it's for this reason that younger people are now getting cancer.

There are all kinds of toxins in the environment, both appreciated and unappreciated.� Recently, I read that over 75,000 chemicals have been approved for industrial use in the United States. One of my European doctor friends told me that artillery shells are now coated in inactivated uranium. Uranium is among the heaviest of metals and can penetrate walls, tanks, and artillery. It's also 98% radioactive, so no matter what anyone's politics are, every time the military utilizes one of these artillery shells, in Iraq or Afghanistan or wherever the place may be, they are increasing environmental radiation.� Over the past ten years, tens of thousands of artillery shells have been discharged in war, which has added a significant load of unappreciated radiation toxicity into our environment.

So there are a lot of toxins in the environment that weren't even there ten years ago. Many of these toxins are mutagenic and carcinogenic, so whether people believe in Beard's theory or in a more traditional origin of cancer, there's no question that chemical toxins in the environment are stimulating cancer development in humans.

A must read to know your options.

I don't have a medical background, English is not my native language and I don't have cancer.
But even for me as a layman the medical explanations were easy to understand
(exept for some words that I had to google and did not even understand in German).
I wanted to read this book as I am eager to learn about alternative medicine, as I think it
is important to know ALL the options there are, to be able to make a wise choice.

I know and have known a lot of people who have or had cancer. From 8 only one is still alive and well and the other one is dying slowly. I think the one that still lives a good life does so because he has a holistic approach to his illness. He meditates and is very careful about what he feeds his body AND mind.This is what impressed me most in this book....the fact that you don't just have to treat the cancer mass itself, but support the body and mind alike to empower it
to start the self healing mechanisms.

With every chapter I finished I thougt: Yes, this is the approach I would go for. At the end I could not decide which would be best for me (in case cancer should ever hit me), but it is not the aim of this book to help you chose an option.
It is supposed to give you a glimpse of what your possibilities are and then explore different options more extensively. I specially liked the mentioning of other websites where you can find additional information. (Be sure I'll dig into those)

Also it struck me how passionate every doctor talked about their patients. Nowadays, where time
is money, this is a rare pearl to find.

I find this book to be an incredible collection of information and I wish the ones that I knew
would have had the chance to read it. And I wish my English was good enough to translate it into
German...I'd do it for free. I hope there will be a German edition pretty soon.

Read this book and if you know anyone that has cancer, give it to him/her with a loving and supporting heart, so they can make the right choice for themselves and not depend on one narrow minded old fashioned doctor alone.

Connie Strasheim Does It, Again! BRAVO!!!

Connie Strasheim, author of Insights Into Lyme Disease Treatment: 13 Lyme-Literate Health Care Practitioners Share Their Healing Strategies (Volume 1) writes another stellar book that offers the reader alternatives to mainstream treatments and therapies for a specific disease. Lyme disease is way less recognized than cancer, and I happen to have Lyme, myself, and thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from Connie's first book. However, if I had cancer- knowing that I would not be the typical patient who submits to receiving chemotherapy and radiation- after, as a child, seeing my dear grandmother burned to a black crisp and die as a result of that (think "char-broiled"), rather than her brain cancer- this is the book I would want at my side while I tried every alternative within my means. There is so much good information in this book, that you won't hear from your local oncologist unless you are fortunate to live in a city that has a progressive doctor or two who dare to be shunned by the rest of the medical world who practice cancer medicine like it is still 1980.

Note: As of right now, you can watch the eye-opening documentary, "Burzynski" online for FREE(!!!), just do a search on Vimeo or YouTube and hit "play". Dr. Burzynski has been curing his patients of all kinds of rare, aggressive, inoperable cancers for years now, only to be persecuted by the FDA at TAXPAYER expense (around $60 million, I believe). Yes, this is the kind of profit-driven "health-care" (more like "disease-care") system that is the foundation of our medical system, which is often unfortunate (and sometimes, deadly) for the consumers. Dr. B is interviewed in the 1st chapter of this book, which I highly recommend to anyone who has cancer and like me, is not interested in the slash, burn, and poison mentality that is the norm. Bravo, Connie. Bravo!!!

An invaluable resource when cancer strikes

I would have loved to have had this book when my husband was diagnosed with throat cancer, five years ago. I don't know if he would have opted for a treatment different than the traditional poison/burn approach, but it would have been fantastic to have this resource on hand, to know what our options were and in case the traditional treatment failed to work.

When you are dealing with a life-threatening illness like cancer, the Internet is incredibly helpful. But the "non-traditional treatment" information is mostly anecdotal, the amount of time you must invest to find answers is mind-boggling, and no single resource or site makes it convenient to intelligently compare alternatives.

Defeat Cancer gives the cancer sufferers - and their loved ones - an invaluable resource. First, you will learn things about cancer that you will not learn from the Internet or the doctors who provide traditional treatment. Second, you will come to understand what options are open to you, and you will be able to choose one that appeals to you.

If you would prefer to avoid the traditional almost-kill-the-patient approach, this book introduces you to the doctors who have had success curing cancer - even after the patients have gone through traditional treatment and the treatment has not eliminated the cancer from their bodies. This is rather amazing, given the shape someone is in after traditional treatment. At the end of his treatment (5 chemo treatments, 30 radiation treatments), my husband looked like he had been imprisoned in a concentration camp. He lost 30 pounds, and he was thin to begin with. It took four nurses to lift him out of his wheelchair and onto the radiation machine for his last few treatments.

He is quite healthy now, thank God, even though he had a 5% chance of making it. The remaining after-effect of the radiation is salivary glands that are operating at about 10% of normal. He has borne this gracefully. We are both thankful that he survived, but I would not wish the experience on anyone.

Connie's book provides options and hope at a time when all hope seems lost. The format of the book, where each doctor tells his and her own story, gives you insights into the character of the doctor as well as the methods that the doctor has developed.

When you're going through the cancer battle, you will want to choose a doctor that you are comfortable with. It makes a big difference. We were lucky; our general practitioner is a good guy who referred us to other good guys. The ear, nose and throat doctor, the oncologist, and the radiation doctor were all wonderful human beings who helped us get through the experience with compassion and concern.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is faced with cancer, or who loves someone who has been diagnosed.

there are very good pieces that could be extracted from the book

This is most helpful for IT governance leaders at about Level 2 out of 5 in maturity (choose a framework) that is aspiring to be a solid Level 3 and some of 4. It is helpful since it pulls together information that is available from so many sources and can help set priorities about what to do next. While it says that it is applicable to executives, there are very good pieces that could be extracted from the book; not sure I would give the book to my company board or senior leadership team though.

Great material, now we just need a map to get to it.

There are some books that must have a high quality index in order to make the book worth using. There is a ton of great information in this book, but the way it is laid out, you need to be able to move from one part of the book to another part of the book to find relevant information on different topics. Without any index at all this book is greatly crippled.

It is a good cover to cover read and you will learn a lot but that is not the strength of this book. I came back to Amazon to see if there is an e-book available that I can use when I need to find out where topics are inside the book. It currently is not being offered as an e-book. Right now unless I want to read through the book from cover to cover it is pretty much useless to me.

I need to look up a lot of information on compliance and regulations, security and architecture, and process implementation. There is a lot of great information on these topics scattered throughout the book but without a map to get to them they're completely worthless to me.

This book is going on the shelf until they come out with an e-book that I can use to look up the topics that I need to find quickly, or they decide to publish an index that we can buy to make the book usable. One other thought is that an index is a key component to making a book usable, if the authors, which wrote about what it takes to make an enterprise architecture usable missed that, what may they have possibly missed in their material that may make it fall completely apart.

This pocket size book does not paint a complete picture. It has technical data but not worth much unless you want a quick reference manual for specialist terms. It is WAY overpriced.
